For those less bothered about sound quality, there are some very cheap mp3 downloads available again from classicselect

I noticed this one which I think may have very good performances -

    https://classicselectworlddigital.co...gital-download KLR Trio

and this set of Mysaskovsky symphonies, which I have on the CD set -

Previous experience suggests that even though these are downloads from the USA, they will work out pretty cheaply. Anyone who's more concerned about sound quality than musical performances can safely ignore these.

Thanks Dave. I got both those. I remembered an LP I had with KLR Trio but had no more recent recordings so a gap was very economically (and amply) filled. Started with Beethoven, it being his year. Very appealing interpretations and lucid mp3 sound. Looking forward to Mysaskovsky which I hardly know at all.

There are other good collections on that site, if you look. I only spotted some yesterday - initially on amazon.com - but not all on amazon.uk, so I went looking elsewhere - and found - again - the classicselect site which I though might have become defunct. I also picked up a collection of Spanish music from am.co.uk - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Big-...5425650&sr=8-1 which I was unable to find on some other sites, and it's only slightly more expensive. I have many of the Bach Guild sets already from previous trawls, but I didn't have the KLR trio set as far as I can remember.

I hope you enjoy them. Not ultra hi-fi - but that's not always the point. Previously I particularly wanted the recordings by David Blum and the Esterhazy Orchestra from one of the Haydn boxes, which are otherwise quite hard to find. In previous years this site has offered many of these at even lower prices in the run up to Christmas, and I found some of the Christmas collections worth having to play over the festive period - and then nobody really cares about hi-fi anyway!

Thanks for the pointer. The Rachmaninov O works - mostly Kogan and Tchaikovsky mostly Rozhdestvensky and pleased to have finally got the Miaskovsky after 7digital messed up a while back.

Decided to put the brakes on. Life is short! A couple of years ago I did get that Christmas Box and also Schubert - an interesting hodgepodge of historical recordings and the rarity (for me at least) of a complete Rosamunde. Also Shosty, another historical cornucopia including the composer in his Piano Quintet and the rare curiosity, Song of the Forests, with Mravinsky.

Die CD Ludwig van Beethoven: Streichquartette Nr.1-16 jetzt probehören und für 13,99 Euro kaufen. Mehr von Ludwig van Beethoven gibt es im Shop.

Played from the page, as it were. Modern instrument setups but without too many modern mannerisms. A lot less than I paid for my set, some years ago.

I'm not quite sure how my browsing fell upon this, (I already have it), but would recommend snapping this up. It is priced much higher from other suppliers:

Since ebay, and most other listings of this CD do not credit the performers, it's London Music Projects conducted by Richard Bernas. A good selection of Satie's songs share the disc.

Is the Satie work in English, French, or some other language? There are versions in English accessible via Youtube - and it's not a work I know at all. I'm not even sure I want to know it. There seem to be enough versions on Youtube to gain some familiarity with it.

Re the Beethoven quartets - I have several sets already, but the Gewandhaus set does look as though it might be a perfectly acceptable extra - I may hit the "buy" button tomorrow.

I am always on the lookout for new song repertoire and coincidentally a recording of Socrate and also a few other rareties by Hughes Cuénod, a singer I have always admired, caught my fancy recently. I saw a quite positive review on MusicWeb and decided to acquire it. I have greatly enjoyed investigating.

Not quite a bargain but got it a Presto as a download.

The only solo voice and piano recording I have of the work is that with Jane Manning and Bojan Gorišek. I will investigate the Cuénod. I'm also fond of John Cage's 2 piano version (no voices).

The current QOBUZ sale has some very tempting items in it. For instance, the Quatuor Mosaïques' Beethoven late quartets (i.e. opera 127, 130, 131, 132 & 135) is just £!2.59 for the 96/24 high-resolution download (replete with booklet pdf). The CD rate version is £8.39.

Opera Depot (US based) have a 24 hour sale featuring Janet Baker in live performance. Unless extended the sale ends during this evening although the usual prices don't break the bank. I've bought a number of their live recordings and now download - some in FLAC, all in mp3 formats. In the past I've bought maybe 8 recordings as CD-R (recordables) which arrived OK from the US. Have to say I've only listened to a couple of the CD versions at any length but they played OK.
There is some enthusiasm for the Klemperer Mahler - Mahler: Second Symphony - Baker, Harper; Klemperer. RFH London, 04 March 1962 (2 mins missing)

Listen to a Sample: Your browser does not support the audio element.   Pros: Otto Klemperer, aged 78, leads an energetic and rapturous performance of Mahler's Second Symphony. Janet Baker sings the alto solos with passionate elegance, and Heather Harper's brief lines are nothing short of angelic. Cons: Although the sou

Other recordings - a Midsummer Nights Dream (ROH, ) a Berlioz Trojans in English (Vickers, Veasey, C. Davis - 1972 ROH, and a Werther (in English - Brecknock, Mackerras ENO 1977) (Mary Stuart, ENO, 1973) and a few others

I was going to headline this a DOWNLOAD - for practical purposes it is, but there is the option of obtaining the CD-R I suppose.

Chandos’ Summer Sale continues. Includes some good bargains (lots of SACDs for a £5). The categories are a bit hit and miss so it’s wise to check them all.
