I've done that but in reverse. 90% of the time the vendor is happy to oblige. Good idea also, to acknowledge that the postage may be more than stated on the original offer....

Thanks both, I'll try a message. Hope their English is better than my German/French!

Most non-native-English-speakers display a much greater mastery of our language than we do of theirs!

You could always impress by attempting to send a message in their native language. There are good translation services on the net!

And some would have you rumbled, and reduce the recipients to fits of hysteria in seconds! You could end up with some really odd stuff coming back.

Perhaps if you explain that you really don't understand Serbo-Croat, Swahili (or whatever) in English, and then give the translation as well, you might get a good response.

Does anyone remember "water sheep"? An order for "hydraulic rams"!

Dave, thank you for your smug, not very amusing reply. I am fully aware of the potential minuses of this approach. I don’t think Serbo-Croat was on the agenda - French and German were mentioned - and in my experience of travelling in France, French people warm more to attempting to address them in broken French than asking him them if they speak English!

My German is good. Happy to assist if needed.

My apologies ... I wasn't only thinking of the languages you mention, and I agree that often people do appreciate speaking us Anglo people talking to others in their own language, which is what I often do, with some trepidation. I'm sure you know a lot about the various problems of writing and speaking in different languages. Best wishes, D.

As a Lieder completist I recently got this 2CD issue of Wolf's complete Mörike settings. It's the only complete recording by one singer - usually they are divided male/female. It cost me £3.58 + postage via Amazon from Music Magpie.

It occurred to me that, having a few years ago sold a small consignment of superfluous CDs to them, it was theoretically possible to buy back one of one's own CDs. I won't be sending them any more. At the prices they pay nowadays it is hardly worth the effort. Our son recently gave up CDs and converted his entire collection of several hundred into a Spotify playlist (there's an app that does it). He kept a couple of favourites and investigated flogging the rest but it wouldn't have been worth it and they went to the charity shop.

How could one resist the personally 'curated' selections of Mr GG, especially as he's been too modest to recommend one of his own oeuvres. Duly purchased and downloaded - and very happy to help a very good cause.
