repeated from the Strauss opera thread -

there is a big 35 CD brilliant box - soon to be available on amazon.uk - already available and even cheaper on amazon.fr - which for some 45 euros gives you the nine CDs of the Kempe/Dresden orchestral works - 9 CDs of chamber/piano works - the EMI Karajan Rosenkavalier - the DG Sinopoli Elektra - the 1970 Bohm Salome - the DG Sinopoli Ariadne - the 1963 Keilberth Frau ohne Schatten - Friedenstag - 3 CDs lieder -

It is, I think, what the French call 'un must... '

Supposedly available now from France, but as the emails some of us have received form amazon.fr confirm, there is a delay.

Bryn - sorry, I hadn't realised this had already featured on this thread. I visited amazon.fr where they said they were temporarily out of stock - but put in an order with an amazon.fr seller - abeille musique - who claim to have it 'genuinely in stock'

        Allons voir...

Hi vinteuil, best of luck. Most recent dipatch date offered to me by amazon.fr is December 14th. Still, I have to admit to being less than major fan of Richard Strauss's work. Always ready to have that situation modified. The early Burlesque is one work of his I am rather fond of, and the late oboe concerto.

(I took the plunge with a real bargain purchase at Amazon.de
              http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B003Z9Q4WG)
Does anyone know if that Bernstein set (from amazon.de) is the same or very similar to the one I tried to order very unsuccessfully from amazon UK at the end of last year? Amazon UK kept my order for a while, then said they couldn't get it, though I had to prompt them. They claimed to have sent me an email, but I never found it. I was prepared to pay the full price, then around £70-£80, so if this is the same or similar, and available, I'll go for it, and ask Santa to deliver it. Is there a CD list?
I'd still like to know about this Bernstein set. It could be the one I failed to buy about a year ago. Also, presumably most of the performances are the NYPO ones, rather than some of the others. If I wanted the later Mahler or Sibelius recordings I guess I'd be looking for a box from DG. Not sure what else would be worth having. LB also did some other interesting recordings - such as Haydn Masses, and maybe the Missa Solemnis.

The Bernstein box was one of the best things I've bought in the last 12 months (from amazon.de and delivered to France). Great for dipping into - I'd forgotten how stylish his Haydn was - and well worth the money.

And on amazon.fr other sellers, I've always found abeille to be true to their word, both on stock and delivery.

Music of the Enlightenment - Limited Edition 30 CD set - Harmonia Mundi

If you missed this as I did at a competitive price when it first came out, then it can be had for £29.99 from Harmonia Mundi's Amazon marketplace site. I have just placed my order. In recent months, have bought a number of items from this site and the service is quick and the items well packed.

Ah yes - it does look like the same set which we discussed here about a year ago - http://www.for3.org/forums/showthrea...mphony-Edition Seems odd that the supplies dried up, but now it seems to be available again. I waited months before Amazon admitted they'd not sent it, and weren't going to. Definitely being added to my lists, though as someone remarked in that earlier thread, this is not good for the wallet.

I hope that Hafod will let us know whether the HM Enlightenment box set is really worth having when it arrives, too. Most of us will already have recordings of the second half of that box, but CDs 1-15 (approx) will probably be new to us.

Your best bets are the DG Mahler box which i think is available around £20 and there is a recently released Sibelius 1/2/5/7 on a DG 2 disc set I have seen HMV I think for £4.99, but that may have gone up now!

PS Yes it is now £9.99 but I picked up from an Amazon merchant a few months ago the boxed set which includes Enigma and Sea interludes.

Vinteuil, for what it is worth, I generally find abeille musique to be a very efficient and reputable company.

                              http://www.amazon.co.uk/Leonard-Bern...94687&sr=301-1
Seems good, and includes the Masses which are not part of the Bernstein Symphony Edition (see amazon.fr or amazon.de for better prices). Getting the Masses alone this is worthwhile at present, though they may have been available separately and cheaply in the past.

I'm curious to know if Bernstein did all the Sibelius symphonies. One listing shows all in the Symphony Edition (NYPO), but the later DG versions seem only to have 1,2,5 and 7. Also it seems that these are available either on 2CDs - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sibelius-Sym...3597779&sr=1-1 or possibly coupled with the Enigma Variations on 3 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sibelius-Com...3597064&sr=1-2 though this is not at all obvious from the product description. However, a few have commented on this on the web site - or is it just the amazon site screwing up again? If so, what is on the 3 CD Sibelius DG set?
