Hmm. A pun without a source though. There are two discs which included songs. It's just that they are without words. You know, a selection of those works so beloved of Fred Rzewski (he even played some on In Tune a few years back).
Shouda gone in Pedants' Paradise, maybe. I got the earlier version of the 40 disc box (sans CDROM) some years ago. I expect there have been some changes to the content.

- different set of Symphonies and Oratorios for a start (and that earlier set had the 'cello Sonatas).

Is there a list somewhere? I've not found one. I have a much earlier box.
The one with the green cover - that's the one I have. The contents of the newer one can be seen if you click on the second image down on the left in hafod's post or here:

I can't find anything other than very basic details on the sites listed so far.
If there were substantial differences with good performances I might have considered the Portraits edition - but otherwise I would let it go. I have several different sets of various Mendelssohn works already. I can't find any details in any of the other more usual sites either.

'Portrait' box: (the one currently under consideration)

I leave a detailed comparison to others on the basis that life is too short and I don't want either box anyway.
The Selections offer (via Amazon?) of the Portrait box is perhaps worth having even for those who already have the earlier Masterworks box. Many of the performances are by different performers, and at the low price that's not such a big deal re the duplication of pieces.
I have succumbed. Perhaps I have been influenced by visiting Mendelssohn's house in Leipzig a year and a bit ago.
Just got an email that I think says that my RVW box set has been Despatched from Italy.
Of course the bad news is I can no longer cancel the order.
Shame.
On offer again, from one Italian retailer linked to their Amazon site (I keep checking), at €257.29!!
Shan't be buying it!
Got most of it anyway, in the same recordings, but would justify to myself at the teamsaint price on grounds of clearing space on the shelves (do you get the librettos of the operas, I wonder?).
The performance of what there is of the Piano Concerto on that set is indeed good, but it is not the full score but a cut version, as was common re. the work when that recording was made.

Interesting - I didn't know there was a 'cut' version. Although I love Dvorak's work, for some reason his piano concerto just doesn't do it for me. I can't seem to get it at all.....
