I certainly wouldn't order such a shoddy sounding disc.........or any others in the series.....

Edit: Isn't that the wrong disc , Beefy?

    Or did I order a different one? I ordered the Kodaly quartet Op33 nos 3, 4 and 6 for £0.38 p.

bloody confusing, all these quartets !!
    Right disc, wrong review

The discs sound better with this review http://www.thestrad.com/reviews/hayd...-op-33-russian

enjoy. Look forward to your review, Beefy !!

I'll stick with the Kodaly quartet for now. Especially since that is what I have ordered !!

Yo-Yo Ma - 30 Years Outside the Box (90 cd) new for £77.47 delivered - from a Marketplace seller (10 copies left).
Quite apart from around a dozen duplicated discs, there is too much non-classical material to interest me. Nor do I need a doorstop.

Ah, our dear friend David Hurwitz!

Now, I actually like DH's reviews, except, as we all know, he has a pathological dislike of anything British, English or Londonish - so I don't take any notice when he's reviewing such things (I've never forgiven him for his wicked comments about the London Classical Players).

EDIT: Postman just delivered it, being ripped to iTunes and playing#2 'The Joke'.

First impressions are that this band is a tad conservative, doesn't have the liveliness of the Kodalys (I have the Kodalys in other Haydn 4tets, not the Op.33), but the period instruments sound great, much better (not like the scraping of tennis rackets that I expected!).

Very good sound quality, I must say (only been listening for 12 minutes as it rips)

That does seem a good price, if one wants the CDs. The amazon reviews are interesting, with several reviewers disliking the box and one really liking it. Apparently the jackets and perhaps the notes are similar to the original CDs. It still probably takes up less space than all the original CDs in their original cases.

One supplier has a track liating - http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/deta...x/hnum/5516060

The track listing helps, but some of the pieces are hard to identify. Composer's names are mostly suppressed, so other clues have to be used.

This page has more information, but shows the pieces, probably not how they are ordered in the set - http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/...lbum_id=239239

The first review in the link below has a somewhat more helpful/manageable listing:

I've just ordered this, which should prove an interesting 10CD Milhaud-Fest:

Here is a listing of the contents (though the price is somewhat higher!):

There does, inevitably, seem to be some overlap with previous issues, such as the EMI Composers in Person boxes and including at least two of the Bernsteins, but many of these recordings will be new to me. The older recordings, with Bathori, Benedetti, Weiner, Long et al, have probably not been available since the 'Darius Milhaud 1928-1948' 3CD set (The Classical Collector) from 1992.

Have the Bernede and Parrenin recordings of Quartets 14 and 15 (which, when played simultaneously, form Milhaud's String Octet, also present) been on CD before? They were on EMI LPs in France and Japan.

Very interesting indeed, but with 8 overlapping CDs for me a non-starter

15cd Mengelberg box from Decca now available for £20.79 from AmUK (ASIN B00CW1MDL4).

Also, a 5cd Claudio Arrau box of Liszt solo piano recordings for £11.42 again from AmUK (ASIN B00HQS2LR4). Yes, I am still trying to work out why the kitten on box appears to have had an altercation with a knitting needle! Contents list courtesy of Presto.

Not if the marketing people had their way. I suspect that something like 'the Pre-Great Symphonies' would be used.

Krips Concertgebouw Mozart 21-41 appeared at the same time as a Philips 8 LP-set -die grossen Symphonien- as Marriner's ASMIF 1-20 also on 8 Philips LPs -die frühen Symphonien- .
Three years later these sets were combined in a 16LP set, volume 1 of the 1977 Philips Mozart Edition.
                              Hence it's "great" versus "early"

Excellent news about the Mengelberg set - many thanks, hafod

The Arrau set of his Liszt recording doesn't mention the B minor sonata, which is ... odd
