...I guess it is the one you are talking about on vinyl. It has been on CD for many years. Fabulously spirited playing and a real feel for those Polish tunes that Telemann liked so much. And quite a few going cheap on Amazon...it demands to be snapped up!
OK - not sure that it has "my" version of the E minor concerto. My 7 inch disc dates back to the 1960s I think. Who are the soloists on that version? The listing in your link simply has the orchestra.

Ah no, the Goebel came out in the 1980s, but it does have the e minor flute and recorder concerto. Your disc is obviously from an older group.

One for collectors of more vintage recordings, perhaps -

Toscanini conducting Verdi - includes La Traviata, Aida, Masked Ball, Falstaff, Otello, the Requiem, Te Deum
plus excerpts from several other works. About £16 for 12 CDs.

Many recordings of Toscanini have compromised sound, for several reasons. What do others think of his performances today?

I think that, despite compromised sound and variable singers, many of Toscanini's operatic performances still have an amazing ability to draw listeners in. Yes some of his tempi are fast but he has a wonderful way of pacing performances and controlling the drama.

Verdi (before Aida at any rate) is the composer with whom I have most problems - except when the conductor is Toscanini, who brings a Promethean fire to burnish the Music that makes others sound like they're scared of getting their fingers burned. Only Solti gets close - but the banana goes to Toscanini, every time.

I really don't need another set of Tchaikovsky symphonies, but Sony has packaged a 12 CD set of Ormandy's RCA recordings, all the Symphonies and Manfred, all the Concertos, extended Ballet excerpts, and it's going for $22. I have some of the Columbia recordings on lp but the RCA recordings reportedly sound fantastic on CD (minus the original noisy RCA lp surfaces and the compression that Columbia used to liberally employ in the early 1960s). I've hardly played the Muti Philharmonia set that I bought on Brilliant. Will somebody give me a compelling reason not to buy the Ormandy?

No but I'll give you one in favour - not only are they minus the original noisy RCA lp surfaces and the compression that Columbia used to liberally employ in the early 1960s but also 1 2 3 and Manfred appear to my knowledge for the first time. Maybe not the very best set ever but well worth having.

Oh dear - the "ultimate" easy listening bargain - CFM as a download without the adverts.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...e_epc__1p_4_ti £2.49 or you can get it for the same price from iTunes. The Instant Classical Collection - throw away all your cherished CDs and just have this instead!

100 pieces - fragments - some of them truncated even further, but mostly in good performances if the listing is to be believed.
2.5p per item - might suit some people, or be good as a sampler for anything you fancy buying the whole disc of.

I've been meaning to explore Ormandy sets further, having had a lot of his LPs earlier on. One thing struck me - were the recordings issued on RCA in the US? Many were on CBS in the UK, or maybe the ones in this box were later recordings. I definitely would like to have some of Ormandy's recordings in a collection. Isn't there also a box with 20th Century music - Bartok etc., and maybe a symphony collection? Maybe there's a larger box with a bigger collection - as with the Bernstein and Walter sets.

The set you have pointed out is available for about £15.50 in the UK from marketplace sellers offering UK distribution (i.e. not from Canada or the US) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-lis...&condition=new Perhaps HMRC wouldn't be interested in the cheapest suppliers based abroad, as the value of the set is probably under their threshold - though the savings are not great. Direct from Amazon its over £20, but with the AutoRip feature which some may find convenient.

The threshold for charging VAT on goods imported from outside the EU is £15 (excluding alcohol, tobacco products, perfume or toilet waters). This seems to be on the value of the goods (i.e. excluding postal charges).

Dave this is a mixture of Sony (ex CBS IN UK) and RCA recordings. The mix is down to the Sony takeover/merger of BMG (ex RCA). This is usually not a problem in identifying the source of recordings except for Ormandy who switched from CBS to RCA in the late 60s. Hence the earlier recordings in the Tchaikovsky boxand the C20th box are Sony (CBS or Columbia in US) and the later ones RCA. There were also some Ormandy issues on EMI in the early 70s eg Sibelius Leminkainen Suite.

So at present it would be possible to risk it from Canada for £13.74 from beaches_music_canada - though the delays etc. due to sending across the Atlantic might be such as to make it preferable to pay slightly more for a nearer delivery source.

And just look at the number of positive reviews! The very negative few are almost all about technical problems with the downloads. There is clearly a market for this sort of thing.
