Curious that this set refers to sacred music and opera. It is true that there are opera overtures, but that's not quite what I'd have expected. I wonder whether the Symphonies set, or the Bruckner set, even though costing more, would be more interesting - or perhaps everyone else has those already!

I do have the Brahms symphony set - though don't listen to it much (or indeed to anyone else's versions, much though I like the symphonies), but it is good.

Dave - depends what you mean by more interesting - with Celi you're always getting something interesting - and usually in a different interpretation of works you've heard before - the French and Russian box is very interesting!

        For me the stand-out Celi/EMI recordings are Debussy, Beethoven 2, Haydn 92, Brahms 1-4, Schumann 2-4, Tchaik 6, Bruckner 4, 5, 6, 8.

I find the discs in sacred/opera box the least interesting (although some of the Wagner is rather nice). The Bruckner is the stand-out if you like Bruckner and don't mind having your perceptions challenged. The finale of the 4th is a thing of extraordinary wonder - possibly trumped by the MPO/Celi performance from Vienna released by Sony.

I was afraid of that - looks like I'll have to put around £70-£90 aside!

Quite by chance picked up some CDs in Oxfam today, including Celibidache conducting Shostakovich 1 and 9, together with Barber's Adagio for Strings. Not bad for £1.99.

How do you do it Dave? Last week, which is typical with my luck in charity shops, all I could find were CDs of: Girls Aloud, Best of Country Line Dancing by Country Dance Kings, Richard Clayderman, Michael Ball, Wow! Karaoke Vol. 5, James Last and best of all Everlasting Love by the cast from Casualty.

                Stan.
I find the best pickings are to be had in university cities and Trendy small towns, (Bradford on avon type places).
British Heart Foundation always seem to be good. Oxfam pricey but often really good stuff. The one on park Street Bristol has some terrific stuff, but prices are carefully checked.

Mind you, i'm on a lean run in the charity shops just now.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

The Oxfam in Chesham, where I used to live, seems to have got more organised in recent months, and actually has a couple of shelves of classical music. Maybe they had a big delivery from a keen collector. Today's haul also included a Korngold symphony, conducted by FWM, a twofer by Karel Ancerl including Dvorak's cello concerto played by Rostropovich, a CD of Vivaldi cello concertos, including the recently discussed 2 cello concerto, and another 2 soloist concerto for violin and cello. Not quite lastly was this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beau-Soir-Ja...U+SOIREE+PAHUD

On other shelves were the sort of selections you have described, which are far more prevalent.

The Celibidache Shostakovich 1 ends with politish applause [why would anyone want to pay 89p for that - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Applause-aft...shostakovich+1 ], and one "Bravo" - now onto 9.

There are some good EMI box set bargains on Amazon at the moment...for example, the Handley/Vaughan Williams and Alban Berg Beethoven sets being at a fantastic price:

Agree with you there TS, leaner than last year (possibly because I have so many CDs that it's getting difficult) Much better success at the Car Boot this year however, for which the beneficiaries are myself, yourselves, Oxfam and BHF. Credit also to Oxfam (generally) & Oxfam Guildford and very well done to their 'Tag a Bag' scheme I had a very encouraging statement from them today having raised a worthwhile amount from CD 'recycling'

Wonderful recording of Delius Sonatas by Tasmin Little for less than a fiver on Amazon.

I wouldn't mind seeing a reissue of this set at a reasonable price.
