It's also on Amazon download at same price - I downloaded, attracted by the price some time ago - don't think I@ve listened to them much but I@d guess at the price OK - but then I bought them because of a gap in my catalogue so I cannot compare with other eligibles other than the Serebrier 5 - which is good but the Serebrier set would cost more. I notice that some of the Naxos Glaz issues are available at cheap prices - no idea how good they are but some interesting couplings to some of the Symphonies.

The Otaka downloads are very good - though IIRC one of the symphonies is in fact conducted by Yondani Butt. [Maybe I don't recall this correctly, it could be Polyansky's set which has missing items substituted by Otaka and Butt] If anyone wants another cheap set, then Fedoseyev is usually very cheap on both iTunes and Amazon - typically around £5 or £6 sometimes with an extra march or two thrown in for the extra £1. Fedoseyev sounds a bit rough, and the recording in some of the symphonies is a bit of a disaster area, but despite this his versions do seem to stand up more and more to repeated listening. Yondani Butt recorded a few of the symphonies (LSO?) and I recall the 4th as having a very beautiful opening in his version. Currently Butt's version of 6 is available on Regis. Mravinsky recorded one (4th), which can be downloaded for under £1 from Classical Music Mobile. Golovanov recorded several - 4,5 and 7, and they are somewhat wild and eccentric. Some of them were on EMI/Melodiya LPs - now hard to find, though "needle drops" may be found in some corners of the Internet.

Glazunov symphonies are somewhat of an acquired taste. I have trodden this path before, and in the end I think it has been worthwhile, but I would sympathise with anyone who gave up after hearing only a few symphonies. The only version I know of number 9 is the one by Serebrier.

Today's little haul from Oxfam Windsor:

                Beethoven: Symphonies 5 and 7 - Philhamonia/Kurt Sanderling (Disky)

Various: "Insalata" - I Fagiolini (Metronome)

and the pick of the bunch:

Schumann: The Four Symphonies and "Manfred" Overture - Cleveland Orchestra/Szell (Sony)

Each of the four items, £1.99.

That's one New Years Resolution blown but those Griller Quartet recordings were too tempting and that Barbirolli Viennese album including his magnificent 1964 Schubert 9 was irresistible

Thank you for this. Every year it slips under my radar and I only catch it late - if at all.
