For those happy with downloads it is always worth checking those "currently discounted" on the Hyperion site. Just go to any CD, highlight the the type(s) of download format that suits you, then enter "currently discounted" (without the quote marks) in their search box. Hey presto (no, not Presto Classical) a list of all currently discounted downloads appears. Order £20 worth or more and you get a further 10% discount. Lots of fine recording there at the moment.

While checking out Buxtehude (MickyD) I found that some items are still cheaper at Amazon - so worth cross checking. I think the Buxtehude harpsichord set (4 CDs) is reasonably priced over there. The Corelli box is also cheaper.

Then there's this set of organ music by Buxtehude- http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buxtehude-Co...3686914&sr=8-1 which seems so cheap that it's almost another "must buy". Buy from the market place sellers for around £7 inc. postage.

I'm not sure which ones MickyD went for. It's a long while since I listened to much Buxtehude, and as I write this I'm hearing some motets (not necessarily by Buxtehude) in my head which are from an LP which I also bought at around the same time as one of my Buxtehude organ music LPs. Lovely stuff - I must try to find out what it was. I hope I've still got that LP - which I think I bought from Tescos in Oxford about 45 years ago. My LPs of Buxtehude organ music had some really good pieces on too, and presumably I'd recognise some of them in the complete set.
Dave, I ordered only from the Brilliant page on Arkiv...I didn't dare look at anything else they had for fear of spending more! But I did cheekily listen to some extracts of the Brilliant Buxtehude organ set on Amazon's French website! It sounded like a really good recording, and I thought at that price one could hardly complain. I also listened to the Buxtehude harpsichord set, but wasn't entirely convinced by the sound of the instrument...I may have been being picky. I just wish the old Erato set of some Buxtehude cantatas with Ton Koopman could be become available again.

I really couldn't resist the complete Clementi set (18 CDs!) on fortepianos at around £15, that is too good to be true! In truth I had no idea that there were quite so many interesting things available on Brilliant. For example, I also ordered a single CD of what looks like is going to be a complete survey of the Hummel piano concertos on period instruments. And then there were the CPE Bach Hamburg and Wurttemberg sonatas from Belder, whose Scarlatti set is also a must.

God knows when I am going to listen to all these!

I have just placed an order for over £110 for heavily reduced Brilliant Classics boxed set alone. Something to keep my ears busy in my eventual dotage.

Whilst searching for Elgar/Mahler, I noted some competitive CD prices at Sainsbury's Entertainment. Cheap on Naxos CD's also, I believe. Happy Hunting!

Mozart: Complete Sonatas Maria Joao Pires - the 1974 Denon recording. £12.

Perhaps some wise owl can suggest whether this or her more expensive DG recording is preferable.

Thanks IGI. A great bargain (surely must be £79.99 as it is everywhere else) and am currently listening to Armida with Jessye Norman - very nice indeed and I must have fresh ears because I could never get on with the Harnoncourt recording with Bartoli and sold it soon after acquisition. But beware downloading because Act 1 of L'incontro Improvviso is missing from the set. I have e-mailed itunes to ask for clarification but am afraid that this might let the cat out of the bag - so be quick if you want to take advantage of the £7.99. Will update if and when I get a response from Apple?!?!

I opted for the BIS 11-CD Mendelssohn set (complete Symphonies, String Symphonies and Concertos). Andrew Litton conducts the Bergen Philharmonic in the symphonies; Isabelle van Keulen, Ronald Brautigam and Love Derwinger are the concerto soloists; in both the concertos and the string symphonies, Lev Markiz conducts the New Sinfonietta Amsterdam.

€24.99 for the lot in lossless format. Not a super bargain, perhaps, but certainly great value.

An even better bargain than the Mendelssohn is this 21-CD set from DG — Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau with Gerald Moore in their trail-blazing late-'60s recordings of Schubert Lieder plus the three great song cycles from the early '70s.

The lossless download is currently priced at €19.99 (Qobuz are running a 30% discount on a selection of DF-D recordings for another 11 days, on top of which the lossless download is currently the same price as MP3). I have the 2-volume Lieder set (18 CDs) in my CD collection, but it's worth €20 to avoid ripping all of those into iTunes: and the song cycles are thrown in as a bonus.

I've just visited that iTunes site, and am currently downloading the whole set of 362 items. There is a user comment about a missing Act - as noted here, but in the context of a cheap download of many operas I think I can live with one missing act. It may well be a mistake in the price, but my account is still in credit, so I assume that they're honouring it right now.
