A.C.’s Debussy didn’t circulate widely here. I had an lp of the early music—Suite Bergamasque, Arabesques, a few other pieces- that I Played to death a few decades ago. I then discovered Debussy later Piano music, with my favorites being the Preludes and Estampes. While I have quite a bit of of recordings of that music, I was surprised checking the collection recently to realize that the only recording I had of Bergamasque was the rather dim sounding Franklin Vox.
A.C. was much better known for his Satie, but when I saw that he had recorded all of Debussy Piano music, 6 CDs for about half the price of a pizza, I succumbed, and it arrived today.
I am listening to the first disc, which has Estampes and the Images, and all I can say is that I never realized that he had such a large palate of color and sonority. This compares very favorably with Michelangelo, Arrau, and Olaffson
