You'll never be big and strong if you don't have your Vegh.

I'm not sure that there is any complete cycle which is "best" but you could do a lot worse. It's a cycle I've lived with for many years and, although the recordings leave something to be desired in terms of squeaky-clean hi-finess, they are perfectly acceptable. And, yes, there is the occasional slip in the playing but there is an understanding of the music which produces some deeply moving performances, especially in the late quartets. The Belcea Quartet (now re-released in a single cheap box for about the same price) will give you a rather different take on this wonderful music. I wouldn't want to be without either. Anyway, to stop rambling on, if I was offered the Vegh Quartet as a gift, I would be a very happy person indeed.

Gamba, I'd just say "Thank you very much"! You have a good friend there.

Just remember that if you want to rip them to use on a pocket media player, you should remove the pre-emphasis. Search these boards using Vegh as your search criterion and you should find guidance on how to get rid of the problem.

                Very grateful for advice.

                They are old & make ' odd ' noises - so do I !
