    Buchberger string qt.

Anyone ready to support reputation of this string quartet before I spend a large sum of money on their Haydn. The little I have heard sounds great, better even than the London Haydn Qt's. op.33.
Great praise from various quarters - am very tempted. All Haydn quartets for £ 50 - a bargain.
This will be a 91st. birthday present to myself. I don't expect to survive much further !

There was some discussion of this in another thread.

The Buchberger set can be obtained even more cheaply, for only 19.99 euro + 6 euro postage, from jpc in Germany

Seems to me that Haydn quartets in one's 92nd year would be absolutely ideal. Go for it, gamba!

I bought the set from JPC to complete the near full set included in the Brilliant Classics big Haydn box (three discs-worth of quartets were either recorded or at least released after the big box was issued). It cost less than buying the missing discs in their twin-pack issues. They are very fine performances and recordings. The instruments are of the modern beefed up variety, but are played with due respect to HIPP research.

I have a couple of their discs and they are outstanding. The chief Haydn Critic for the American Magazine Fanfare is named James North and he is very high on this set.

What good friends you are !

I am about to follow up your valuable information on obtaining them from Germany at an incredibly low price.

I feel I am due a ' special ' present in March. my 91st.. Things aren't going very well. Have been given a blood transfusion every 4 weeks, not working as it should any longer. so now to be increased to every 2 weeks. Also trying to live with lots of pain without it showing - be brave young man ! Yesterday my son, who lives nearby ( in Scottish terms ) announced he was leaving Scotland & going to live in Dartford, Kent. We , my wife & I relied upon his occasional help. We shall soon be in the hands of ' carers .' Ah Well ! that's life !
Anyway, let's see if I can make this transaction work.

            Thank you all again,

Deepest sympathies on your predicament. I hope that the NHS et al in East Dunbartonshire treat you as they should (I find the NHS in Tayside to be light years better than where I last lived in England - in Manchester). JPC are very efficient so the transaction should, I hope, work without any hitches. A great choice of music to explore for your birthday and the years ahead.

              Kindest regards

Well said, Dougie. I am half Scottish & have never regretted moving back here. That was in 1961 !

We're better off for all our services. - but that doesn't make me like the 1st Minister !!

I can think of no better birthday present than the Haydn String Quartets, and the Buchbergers have some serious admirers, so they can't be "bad" performances/recordings. At the price gurnemanz quotes it would seem an unmissable set!

Very sorry to hear of your continuing health problems, gamba - I so hope that they sort themselves out soon and that the Quartets bring you the consolation and joy on your birthday and for many years to come.

Thank you, ferney. It's a warming experience to receive kind messages from those within our group.

I ordered these (Haydn quartets) a few weeks ago, and they came very quickly. You can practice your knowledge of German on the jpc site, or you can have most things translated into English. Sorry to hear about the ongoing health problems - hang in there. I have a friend who recently celebrated his 99th birthday, and another person we know slightly made it to 100. It can be done.

We need you to keep regaling us with your escapades from earlier years.

Just to endorse what others have said about the Buchbergers - you won't regret the purchase!! At 19 Euros + P&P you won't go far wrong. I got set from jpc some weeks ago and am enjoying them. You may be tempted as I was with some other Haydn at jpc like the Fischer symphonies which you get for the one P&P charge.

Also hope you won't miss family support too much.

My Buchberger Quartet purchase arrived this morning, exemplary packaging, and I'm already on the second disc - wonderful music.

I hope that yours arrives in time for the great day, gamba & that you derive much pleasure from it

Thank you very much folks. Have had some problems in resolving payment form. My fault. Also, cannot believe the price is so low. Must now consider ALL the Bach cantatas, not serious, although it would be of interest to know - that's for my 100 th. !
Thank you all for your help & advice.

Please tell us how you find the quartets. I only know the Emperor - so I guess I've got quite a few to catch up on
