    THE FURTWÄNGLER LEGACY - BBC R3 - 30th NOVEMBER 2004

    Hi all

For a decade now I have been kicking myself for having missed an evening's 4 hours of programmes (7:30-11:30pm) broadcast to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Furtwaengler's death, hosted by Rob Cowan, but featuring many others like Richard Osborne etc. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/pip/pip/3lm1v/

Would any forumite please happen to have a copy? If you do I would very much appreciate a PM - my shins are red raw now, as you can imagine!!!

    Thanks!

I'm curious. I would assume by now that you have contacted the BBC asking if there is some way you could obtain the material. What has been their response?

No reply, as per.... Though I reckon rfg if they did it would be along the lines of "sorry, but...". What really annoys me is how I managed to miss it when it was on - incredible! I can only hope that some diligent WF enthusiast out here on the board may have a copy!

Correct me if I am wrong, Karafan, but isn't the BBC at least partially dependent upon Public Funding? Assuming that you are a British Taxpayer, then you are entitled to a response from them, although it may require a a fair amount of persistence on your part.
On this side of the pond, the closest thing that we have to the Beeb is National Public Radio. NPR broadcasts are all archived somehow by the Library of Congress. (My nephew was recently employed by NPR and now works for a magazine named Current that is sort of a Trade Journal for NPR, and I have heard some of his stories about pulling old movie reviews from NPR Broadcasts from the 1990s).
I wish you luck obtaining the the broadcast--you may also want to consider scouring internet forums that are based in the Far East, as Furtwaengler Fanatacism is alive and well out there--but if you don't I hope that you can receive some help from the BBC.

Public funded broadcaster or not, the BBC would give you short shrift if you asked for a copy of one of their broadcasts. Perhaps these things work differently in the US but I doubt if such a request would be heeded otherwise we'd all be doing it.

Sadly, I agree Petrushka. My only real hope is that a collector has it (thanks for the tips re the far east and the WF Society - I doubt the latter would have it, though, given its origins). Still, nil desperandum, eh?

It was a Classic Arts Production.
Might be worth emailing them on the subject, or maybe try emailing Rob Cowan at Essential Classics?

That idea had occurred to me also.

Al this WF talk has encouraged me to revisit the mighty Furtwangler 107 CD set.
