    Beethoven Cello Sonatas

My only CD of these works is by the Brendels, and it has never quite 'caught fire' for me. Having heard the new Isserlis/Levin recording on CDR this morning, I'm tempted to invest, despite not being a huge fortepiano fan up to now. Feel free to help me make up my mind...

My first recording was the famous Richter/Rostropovich set. I have invested in a couple of others but I am afraid that none other comes close to that set for me. My latest was Bailey and Dinnerstein on an itunes download.
Every Cellist records these, so you may want to just pick one and go for it. I've seen a lot of praise of Muller-Schott (sorry, don't know how to do umlaats here), although I can't remember who the Pianist is and I haven't heard them, although I do like what i have heard of the Cellist in other music.

You must have been up early!

I thought the Isserlis/Levin CD sounded really good. Very tempting.

PS: Sorry - I thought Richard had heard this from his side of the pond - presumably not yet.

This was my first set too, on LP. I no longer have the means to play it but perhaps I should reinvest in a digital format.

I didn't really get into these via Rostropovich, though I had the recordings a long while ago. Hearing du Pré, Isserlis and Tortelier have gradually brought me round. Maybe I'd like Rostropovich now - though not sure.

I've heard Isserlis live do all the Beethoven sonatas, and I think his latest recording sounded up to the mark.

... I liked these a lot. Not sure they will dethrone my cuurent favourite - Wispelwey / Komen - but shall certainly want to listen again...

Have to say that is also my experience. Although Fournier and Gulda are superb.

Splendid R & R are indeed and as much as there is tremendous fizz in the du pre/barenboim collaboration she also made an earlier stupendous recording of 3 and 5 with Stephen Bishop which later turned up on CFP and was my introduction to the sonatas.

The Pianist in the Muller Schott recordings is Angela Hewitt. That would be an interesting recording.

Bailey and Dinnerstein ! Sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen - like a Vanessa Mae. Valentina Lisitsa set of the violin sonatas !

Fournier in three stages of his great career with Schnabel in the EMI ICON box); with Gulda; and latterly with Kempff. What riches

Richter and Rostropovich too of course and i'm looking forward to hearing the Wispelwey sets and the new Isserlis/Levin set..

A week or two back, to replace my one LP set by Chuchro/ Pananka, I picked up a CD set by some new kids on the block called, umm, Casals and Serkin...

though I do have that du Pre/ Bishop pair too...
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

That Chuchro/ set apparently never made it to this set of the pond. Nor did I see it when I shopped in Prague a few months ago, because I would have grabbed it if I had.
What label is the Casals/Serkin set?

I also have two discs of Christophe Coin and Patrick Cohen on period instruments, recorded some time ago in the 80s for Harmonia Mundi. I wonder if Vinteuil remembers these?
