DG's "Westminster Legacy" box - catnip for nostalgia fans

Guilty as charged of it mainly being for nostalgic reasons that I've bought it. My father had a bit of a thing about Westminster LPs (and those of their cheaper UK little brother, Whitehall) so I've been enjoying re-acquainting myself with Leinsdorf's Mozart, Boult's Holst/V-W, Rodzinski's Tchaikovsky, Egon Petri's Beethoven and Monteux's Berlioz. Not quite so sure about Scherchen's Mozart Requiem. Had I been feeling wildly extravagant, I might have gone for the two Korean boxes but most of the plums seem to be in this one so it suits me very well. And it is, of course, another box (box sets of CDs being almost as seductive as box sets of LPs in my eyes). I'm sorry that Universal don't own the rights to the Vox catalogue as a few Vox (Mega) Boxes would be most welcome.

That Julian Bream (all-Spanish) album dates from 1956, only his second ever record - by 1959 he was with RCA where he remained until the 1990s. Westminster was an imprint of HMV/EMI, was it not, presumably bought up by DG?

I probably won't make the leap but note that there is the one Beethoven symphony from the LSO and Monteux the rest of whose cycle was made with the LSO [60/61] and VPO [57-60] for RCA via Decca. Strange that Westminster got the 9th made in 1962. The Westminster catalogue was owned by MCA in the US for while and they issued this 9th CD in 88 and again in 97 but then so did DG in 2001 and also EMI in 2002.
Just been reading the 66 page essay by Kurt List the producer of Westminster's recordings on the subject of High Fidelity!! Fascinating read. He Westmonster had a link with Pye Nixa at this time.

While we're at old labels there is also Vanguard who recorded a few Handel choral pieces and operas with the ECO and Johanes Somary. I remember learning Semele from that recording, marvellous piece. Some of them were the only versions for a while. They were recorded in the Conway Hall which still there and is in the NE corner of Red Lion Square, not that far from where Kingsway hall used to be.Last edited by Gordon; 14-01-14, 21:03.

Qobuz now appear to be more aware of the UK, as when I accessed the pages a pop up appeared on my iPad inviting me to join. I know that others here have expressed support for Qobuz, and there seems to be justification re either price or quality for some issues, but I'm unsure that these factors apply in this case.
Perhaps you are already a member, in which case there is maybe no extra charge for streaming.

I'd be interested how you use Qobuz too, Steve - stream to audition then buy/download what you like? (And... is there a way to use Qobuz for streaming via the jolly old Airport Express? And via the latter means, can you tell the difference in quality with the 'Studio Master' downloads?)"...the isle is full of noises,

You can see a google translate of the various options here - click on 'UNFOLD TO COMPARE ALL OF OUR LISTINGS!' to see them all in detail...
To to use the airport express to stream from an iPad you'd need one of the options that allow the use of a mobile device. I signed up for the studio master option purely because I wanted to hear the uncompressed version of the recordings. Whether there's an audible difference between that and 320k MP3s is a moot point <grin>.
im listening to the Haydn Millitary symphony now. The remastering's been done rather well.Steve
