I also really like the 10 Cd piano trio box from the van Swieten Trio, which I got quite cheaply a few years ago.
I just got my copy of the Ameling/Demus set...it is delightful, but despite the mention of a fortepiano on the CD box, the instrument used is most definitely a modern grand.

I'll be able to order the highly recommended and complete Buchberger set soon but in the meantime I'm greatly enjoying the 10 CD set of the Quattuor Mosaïques' performances

I hope you manage the set at the recent Jpc price, which was very competitive. My set arrived a few days ago.- very good service.

i would also, like to hear the Mosaiques - there's just not enough time? The latest prices ar quite good, though - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Haydn-Quarte...haydn+mosaique

I have a couple of the Kodaly Quartet's CDs... but I sense the need to be equipped with more and better. I can feel dear old Haydn's SQs growing on me.

The extracts from the new recording by the Doric SQ struck me when played on CD Review at the weekend.

But for a splurge now, it would seem from the above that one can't go wrong with the London Haydn Quartet on Hyperion....

However, how would those who know the recordings comment on the comparisons made in this critique, posted by an apparently-knowledgeable listener on one of the websites?

Compared to the other recordings that I have of the op20 set, this one [The London Haydn Quartet] sounds very lean and spare. It is much less dynamic that the Mosaiques, who are also on period instruments, and the Auryn, and less dynamic than the Pellegrini. The London Haydn Quartet sound reminds me of viols, so if that's your taste you'll like this. I don't think the wonderful range of emotional expression of Haydn comes through, nor the 'dialogue between intelligent individuals'. I would recommend any of the other three sets that I have named.

Skirting around you question Cali () I have the sets by Buchberger quartet and Mosaiques quartet, both of which give me much pleasure.

If you are going down the LHQ/Festetics routes you are looking at considerable outlay. The Buchbergers are cheap as chips and the Mosaiques are reasonable. You could afford to buy the Buchberger now & collect the LHQ ... or wait til they are released in a hopefully mid-priced box

I think we'll be waiting a while for that LHQ box...by my calculations, they've not yet reached the halfway stage of the quartets.

Not such a terribly expensive purchase after all - under £70. I'll add it to my wish list and decide in the year(s) to come.

Intrigued... Must have a listen to some samples. But as far as the cheapness is concerned - and in my new "prefer downloads to CDs" mode - I nearly fell off my chair when I read, in the CD entry on amazon about the complete Buchbergers set:

"Buy the MP3 album for £9.19 at the Amazon Digital Music Store."

That would surely be insanely good value if it were true.... In the limited time available at the moment, I think it's a mistake though ... if you click on those words on the CD page here:

you get taken to a page which seems to be about just Vols 1 - 3:

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Or if you're into downloads, Qobuz have it for £28 - http://www.qobuz.com/gb-en/interpret...ref=dac_3&s=pe

At less than £3.30 a disc (new, via the lowest priced UK marketplace supplier), I'd say it's pretty good, though the Qobuz route is even more attractive, 'cept I already have the discs in their separate volumes.

The point I was trying to make is that the Buchbergers come in at less than half the CD price.

My pockets are not very deep, sadly.
