Nice performances from the VPO and Barenboim this morning, and guess what ? There were nine women in the orchestra!

Don't think you'll be disappointed. I've watched it twice now and think it's a vintage New Year's Day Concert and easily the best of recent years.

Boskovsky was without peer in this music and I'd still recommend his Decca set with the VPO over any other.

I see Mehta is back next year - yawn . He , FWM, Muti and Maazel have produced the most disappointing NYD concerts in my experience .

I should like to see some other conductors given a go .

How about - Alsop,Pappano and Nelsons especially Nelsons.

... Carlos Kleiber's light as air New Year's day Concerts from 1989 and 1991 stunningly musical...

Surprised that no one has mentioned Erich Kleiber who is simply stunning in this repertoire. Carlos has the better sound but Erich (who was Viennese) is even more musical to my ear. My wife - not easily pleased - swoons when she hears Erich in the Strauss family. Erich is also good in Richard Strauss, of course...

Kleiber was certainly great, and so was the initiator of these concerts, Clemens Krauss. Some years ago Preiser re-issued a Decca recording of a New Years Day concert conducted by him. Unfortunately this 2 CD set has no date, but I suspect it's c. 1950. These are treasurable discs, I don't know if they are still in circulation, but they certainly deserve re-issue.

I had to do a little research on this set, since the track listing was all over the place.

Thanks for that info, Petrushka. After my last posting I found myself wondering if the 2 disc Preiser / Decca set was recorded live, or whether it was a later recording under studio conditions, since there is no applause. I'll certainly consider the Opus Kura set, it might of course be the same recording as the Preiser which does not have a recording date and has rather poor documentation. The performances are wonderful.

Bowled over by Carlos Kleiber's NYD concerts of 1989 and 1992 - so light, so subtle in rubato - I picked up at Oxfam his DGG Fledermaus with Varady, Popp, Prey, Kollo etc. Simply marvellous.
