And then there's the pleasure of choosing a CD to give as a gift: you select something that you know the recipient doesn't have, but that you think s/he'll enjoy - and their pleasure and surprise when they receive it. So much more indicative of friendship than a download token.

In view of the talk of external HDDs I thought I'd just mention that the HP ProLiant G7 Microserver is available until the end of the month from the likes of ebuyer with a cashback offer that brings the price down to £130 (for a 4 bay server/NAS box).

It is really only suitable for people with a techie bent as you have to install your own operating system, but IMO it is a real bargain - great build quality and rock solid performance (I own an earlier, less powerful, model.)

Ever since my car stereo broke 3 months ago, I have had not had the chance to play any of my music in the car but yesterday, a device I ordered arrived in the post which will allow me to use the iPod. Splendid. I had bought something similar before but that device was a total waste of money and did not work.

I'm still buying CDs even though the 160GB iPod is full...

I've no evidence, but given that they most likely use standard hard disks I'd have thought that they were no more, or less, reliable than a 'normal' hard drive.
