Boarders' Choice 2013

Far more interesting, to my mind, than CD Review Critics' Choice would be for boarders to list just the composers whose music has featured on their 2013 purchases and to give details of their half dozen favourite recordings acquired this year.

I haven't a moment just now but how about it?

For me:

Britten String Quartets 1,2, 3 The Takacs Quartet. A recent purchase, after the many Britten programs. These are works, I didn't know but have come to love.


John Taverner , Missa Gloria tibi Trinitas, the Tallis Scholars. A fantastic disc that not only celebrates the music of Taverner but also the 40 anniversary of the Tallis Scholars.

I have acquired music by Avison, J C Bach, J S Bach, Bartok, Beethoven, Berg, Britten, James Brooks, Brahms, Chaminade, Gluck, Haydn, Hindemith, Hook, Lassus, Thos. Linley Jr., John Mahon, Monteverdi, Mozart, Myslivecek, Martin Peerson, Peter Philips, Ravel, John Rutter, Saint-Saens, Domenico Scarlatti, Schubert, Schumann, Stravinsky, Thomas Shaw, Walton, Sam Wesley. Also boxed sets by Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet, Eileen Joyce and Moura Lympany with composers too numerous to list here!

Very few of these, as I recall, were 2013 releases. I have gained particular pleasure from:-

I'm very much looking forward to finding the time for Hindemith's Mathis der Maler over Christmas.

Like many people, I treasure the vast, truly endless supply of recorded music available to us these days.
With a lot of help from my friends on this forum I have discovered a huge array of music new to me this year. Here are some real highlights, each of which is a very special work or recording, with a thanks to some of the people who pointed the way:

Scott Walker. Bish Bosch. ( Nobody, but lateralthinking1 likes him too, come back soon Lat).

Esa-Pekka Salonen .Wing on Wing. Finnish RSO. (Beef !!!! Oven?!?!)

Rubbra String Quartets. Sterling SQ. (Edgeleyrob and others)

Schoenberg Piano Concerto. Various performers, no specific one. (All the folks who joined in that H and N thread earlier in the year)
