My first FLAC download. I don't like their choral stuff - soloists too closely miked for my tastes - but their BCs feel very special for now (I haven't lived with them enough yet to see if this feeling lasts the distance). For now it's a refreshing alternative to the Italian approach (e.g. Il Giardino Armonico)

      Bach, Bruckner, Wagner, Mozart.

Bach: Cello Suites, Paul Tortelier. S/h purchase, EMI Red Line series, 2 separate purchases. Most listened to discs of the year? Reckon so.

Mozart: Complete Piano Sonatas, Mitsuko Uchida (Philips). S/H bargain via eBay. Sold Maria Joao Pires Denon/Brilliant set. No regrets. The Uchida's had very heavy rotation.

Bruckner: Symphony No. 8, Gunter Wand/NDR Sinfonieorchester. A generous donation from a fellow boarder. Heard this again today. It could make a Bruckner convert out of Salymap. The rasping horns, the drama, the superb recording, the way Wand holds it all together...mesmerising. Still the best Bruckner disc I own.

Mozart: Posthorn Serenade, Bohm/BP (DG). £0.01 Amazon Marketplace. Startling Mozart. I heard the magical modern-sounding drama of that very first chord change in the Bruckner today!!

Mozart: Concert Arias, Gundula Janowitz (DG). Birthday gift. Gundula Janowitz. 'nuff said.

            Nice thread.
For me it has been the year of the big boxed sets.
            In no particular order:
            1) Fleisher/Szell-- Beethoven/Brahms/Mozart 25 Piano Concertos A very musically satisfying set, as the B&B have always been my top choices for these works. The remastering adds that much more pleasure.
            2) Reiner Richard Strauss Again, I had a lot of these already, but the sound improvement here is vast
            3) Mercury Living Presence Part II--excellent Dorati and Paray and some of the lesser known stuff is a lot of fun
            4) David Oistrakh/EMI box--a gold mine of great recordings, and for me, there wasn't much duplication
            5) Gary Graffman set--short playing times for many ofthe lps, but at the bargain price it's churlish to complain
            6) Rudolf Serkin Beethoven Sonata set--not a complete set, but the ones represented are fantastic, and the Concerto recordings are excellent

            Honorable Mentions:
            Karajan Bruckner
            Klemperer Bruckner
            Casadasus/Szell Mozart Concertos
            Stokowski-RCA Stereo Recordings
            EMI Mahler Box

I have been steadily acquiring Stile Antico's discs and have been bowled over by them.

Another delight was the luxurious sound that Christophe Rousset gets from a wonderful historic instrument in his new 2 CD set of the harpsichord music by Duphly. Superb!

Oh dear, MickyD you've just pushed me over the edge into acquiring Rousset's Duphly CD.

I hadn't spotted these, vints. Fascinating. Pity they are more than I usually invest. Wait till they are boxed up? Mmmm...

Vints is always an early adopter, verismissimo. On this occasion I might join him in some of them, if Mr Dunkin-Smiff can be persuaded to enter into the Seasonal Spirit ;biggrin:

I think these two would be my own "stand out" choices, too. I never thought I'd need to have another Piano recording of the Goldbergs, but I find the sheer Musicianship that Denk brings to the work (such an astonishing marriage between Bach's notes, Denk's imagination and fingers, and the modern piano) irresistable.

And the Gielen ... just so ... so ... fecking good!

... o lordy! - I had hoped I wd be able to withstand the temptation - but ferneyhiccup's words have "pushed me over the edge", as the Amateur puts it.

Still, I see I can get it from Sainsbury's for £10 post free. A new-year present to self

I never laid a finger on amateur, honest, but I'm glad to say that mine arrived yesterday.

You won't regret it, am51! It is a lovely set in all respects...the music, the performer, the instrument and the recording quality. Bravo!
