Talking of Katherine Jenkins I remembered seeing her on the Jonathan Ross show some years back and she sang a short extract of the Welsh national anthem which showed that when singing " naturally" she has rather a good straight soprano voice - but no money in that unlike all the ghastly warbling

See at 4.36 in this You Tube extract - cut it off as soon as she stops singing as Jonathan Ross is deeply up himself as ever .

Where is the Sheffield store now? Last time I looked (a few months ago) the whole of that area was being redeveloped and there was scaffolding around - or maybe I'm not thinking of the exact location.

Re Katherine Jenkins, I think she may have a good voice from what I've heard, but presumably there's no money to be made in "proper" singing. I guess we can't really blame her for that, she has her own life to lead. I do wonder if she would have been rather good as a classical singer. In the meantime we are living in a world in which X factor, Pop Idol etc. talents are clearly more important.

A couple of years ago I found Hans Rott's E major symphony in the Leeds branch - and bought it . Rott was in Anton Bruckner's composition class in the Vienna Conservatoire at the same time as Mahler and Wolf. Bruckner considered him a finer composer than either of these better-known names but sadly he died young. His symphony was a major influence on Mahler but it is almost never performed now - if indeed it ever was .

No, I wasn't aware that such a big name had recorded it. Mine is by the Munich Radio Orchestra conducted by Sebastian Weigle on Arte Nova; I believe there is also one by a semi-pro American Orchestra on Helios/ Hyperion.

Of the three mentioned so far, Jarvi is streets ahead, not least because he has the best Orchestra (Frankfurt RSO). There's also a good one by Segerstam and the Norrkoping SO on BIS.

Would love to hear it with one of the really great Mahler/Bruckner orchestras - RCO or BRSO perhaps!

People within visiting distance of Salisbury may be pleased to know that the The Collector's Room in Endless Street is still alive and well under new ownership and has a good selection of CDs and also a good second hand section including some vinyl. As was the case when Edward and Beryl ran it, there is opera and jazz and everything in between.

Salisbury's market square has had a face lift too and looks rather splendid now. Lovely day for a visit!

Make sure you've spent all your dosh on CDs first.

[QUOTE=The Bond Street one is small and the classics section is a mere fraction of the upper floor - truly pathetic [/QUOTE]

And to think this was opened by Edward Elgar: he must be spinning!

I have enjoyed that Braunfels CD a great deal - HMV at £9.99 may be the place to go for Dutton CDs !

It really does seem unbelievable that in LONDON there is really nowhere to go and browse new CDs - apart from the already-mentioned sad shadows of their former selves, which are beyond a bad joke. Places like Gramex are worth their weight in gold.
