No Four Seasons here either. I bought the JEG Bach B Minor Mass about a year ago as well but haven't played it yet

Also bought Simon Preston's complete set of the organ works when it was going very cheap on Amazon earlier this year but haven't played much of that either

Well the B Minor Mass blew my mind on first hearing, almost scared to listen again and yet I feel I must.

('You've got me blowin, blowin my mind,
Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?')

      Starting to ramble again now.....

I feel the need to get to know Bach now, never have done before, don't know the Cantatas,Brandenburgs etc etc etc.

Surprised about The Seasons, thought it was just me.

As Christmas approaches, when is the CD Review recommendations for 2013? I assume it will be in 2 weeks? Has anyone heard and I am wondering who will be reviewing. I am hoping for some good recommendations on Early Music.

It would appear that owning Vivaldi's Four Seasons, far from branding one as a member of the common herd is a mark of rare good taste. Must hurry to get my copy.
            Only joking.
I have asked Santa to bring me Boccherini's String Quartets Op.32, as recommended by gamba some time ago.

... ah, but one can own copies without necessarily having to listen to them.

I expect I have half a dozen copies of the Seasons in various box sets of performers - record labels - Vivaldi editions.

I don't think I have consciously played any of my Four Seasons CDs in the last dozen years. Am I still allowed to retain my 'rare good taste' credit?

An enviable journey ahead of you. Bach's work are truly eternal, fathomless. Even with a brief acquaintance, one can see why so many were chosen to represent humanity on Voyager's Golden Record. I can never tire of his Cello Suites - the gift that keeps on giving. Treat yourself to the Paul Tortelier set: an investment that will last you a lifetime and provide you with endless, manifold dividends.

vinteuil, for some reason I can't make a reply with quote to your message - please don't ask!

In reply to your question: "Am I still allowed to retain my 'rare good taste' credit?" I say,

vinteuil, was it ever in any doubt?

this must be capable of being translated into some unfathomably beautiful mathematical equation.

                    Like this:

                    (z2-z3)^2 = 4(z3-z1)(z1-z2) sin^2 alpha/2

                    or

                    3/2G(0,0,1/U1,1/u1+u2;1)+ 3/2G (0,0,1/U1,1/u1+u3;1)+ 3/2G+(0,0,1/U1,1/u1+u2;1).

I would love to understand stuff like that !!

Why is there a + after the third G?, I mean it reads like an operand with four variables in one field and a single variable in a second field.

......and by the way having just seen Gravity and I don't know where to put this observation otherwise, a debris storm from a nuclear explosion has all the components single mindedly hurtling towards our hero and heroine whereas if I understand centripetal (NOT centrifugal) force correctly, only those bits of debris which leave the explosion in the direction the exploding object was travelling in with precisely the orbital speed will stay in orbit, those faster will disappear into outer space and those slower will fall toward the earth,................. I knew I shouldn't have gone!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway: consolation from Sammy Davis Jr., now that Advent is here

Sammy David Jr.I'm sorry if I am re-using some pictures. I have so many it's hard to keep track of them!

which may be on the Rat Pack Christmas CD.

I don't have The Four Seasons either. I've only heard the set once, in a concert a couple of years ago.

                            Thanks Thropps.

I have Fournier in the Cello Suites,Grumiaux in the solo violin stuff,Gould Goldbergs and Argerich in some piano music.
I'm ashamed to admit I rarely listen.
Gonna get myself some of those choral works and Brandenburgs etc for Christmas,as recommended by the kind folks on here, then in the new year I'll have a real go at JSB.

I have a number of CDs of the Four Seasons - but these days I probably listen more to the ones which feature Frankie Valli. Vivaldi was undoubtedly a clever composer but a lot of it sounds to have a lot of unpleasant scraping and piercing attached to it, and theres too much of it on Breakfast and EC.

When some time back I asked BIS if they were going to issue boxes five and six to complete the set, they said: no plans to do so; current priority is to complete the series of CDs, after which they wd be considering producing a box of the Complete Cantatas.
Sofar Bis hasn't released a Complete sibelius Edition in one 65CD-set either.
