Current crazes

I assume you also go through patches of listening to something over and over again.

Perhaps you're revisiting old friends or exploring new stuff.

Two items currently represent a sort of craze I'm going through:

The Prokofiev Seventh Symphony, thanks to the live broadcast, and the Rachmaninov Piano Trios following an impulse purchase of the new Ashkenazy recordings.

Of course I'll move on in time but I'm sticking with these glorious pieces a little while yet.

For me Alison it's Schubert's String Quintet and the D887 Quartet.
I must have listened to each about 3 or 4 times this last week.
Can't currently get enough of Weinberg's String Quartets too.

The repeated listenings don't often get mentioned on the other threads. Don't know the Weinberg works at all.

Lovely idea for a thread.

Mozart, Mozart, Mozart, to wit:

- Uchida's rendition of the Piano Sonata in F Major K.280 (that adagio - so dark and almost Bach-like in its trills and harmonic shifts)
- Idomeneo Overture and the aria 'Zeffiretti lusinghieri'
- the violin sonatas (Haebler/Szeryng) in readiness for Vilde Frang's LSO St Luke's concert next month
- some of those splendid Divertimenti (K.287, 205)

Not a craze exactly, but am listening to a lot of Britten that is new to me at the moment, like the SQs.
Also cannot get enough of the Rubbra SQs.

Those Britten SQs can be had very cheaply on Naxos played by the excellent Maggini Quartet. The Belcea Q. cycle of all three can often be had for 'a poorly octopus', too.

Wellesz' Suite for violin and (chamber)orchestra op.38 is a some 12 minute work which turned out to be quite addictive this week

Peterson-Berger Frosöblomster Noriko Ogawa CD

Sibelius: Sandels - both the original and revised versions. Finally spotted the text is in Swedish, not Finnish, and managed to get hold of a copy. Very entertaining "shaggy dog" story about General Sandels, who at least at first seems very laid back. Words on p130 of this pdf file - http://www.naxosmusiclibrary.com/sha...CD-1906-08.pdf

The "craze" for the last two partly induced by these being accessible on my iPad, in an area where there was no 3G nor Wi-Fi, and not in range of my music server. I must remember to download some more "songs" to the device for trips away to such remote places (south coast Sussex).

Bruckner - again!

Currently wending my way through another composite cycle of the symphonies. Mind, there are some good concerts on R3 next week so I may not get very far! Even the elusive 2nd symphony may finally be starting to 'click' in my head after years of failing to 'get' it. The Scherzo is terrific though.

Weinberg is relatively new to me Alison.
It all started with suffolkcoastal's symphonic journey thread,symphonies led to chamber music and so began my 'how have I not known this music for so long' Weinberg obsession.
Loads of his stuff on you tube and in the Naxos library.

This,to me at least,is heartwrenching

Hope I'm not ruffling too many feathers by saying that I reckon some of his music is on a par with DSCH.
