Must give it some time, and then listen to the Bernstein again - comparison of even lengthy extracts can be cruel.

I already had the Simon Bolivar recording and thought it was the real deal from the moment I heard it
No doubt the 1947 Walter did not get a mention - legend of a record .

I enjoyed the Estampes podcast while on holiday last month - confusingly, in Italy. Blechacz's triumph didn't surprise me: I bought the cd soon after it came out, and am very impressed by his playing. I also rather liked the extracts that I heard from their runner-up, a young Japanese player new to me, Kotaro Fukuma.

Many thanks for these summaries & surprises, Caliban

Any chance of your making a regular feature of this, in your own time naturally

Do they pass judgement weekly or monthly?

It's a weekly programme, ams - Sunday evenings... They have a complete podcast version (i.e. the full 2 hours with all the extracts intact) which is what I collect and listen to when I can. Recently that's not been often, hence I will post as often as I can but 'regular' may be asking too much.

Plus there's the 'embargo' period, so as not to spoil the enjoyment of others who may be catching up. For that reason, I don't think it would be right yet to post the result of the Alpensinfonie 'Tribune' which I couldn't resist listening to this week... A MAJOR SURPRISE for me - A Stunning Winner which I didn't even know existed !!

          ......Suspense.....

However I can talk about a December 2013 programme, on Poulenc's Gloria - wonderful listening whilst bowling along the empty roads of rural France!!

The versions listened to were: Dutoit, Pretre, Corboz, Jansons (RCO live) and Paavo Järvi... plus the chosen winner:

          Kathleen Battle, soprano
          Tanglewood Festival Chorus
          Boston Symphony Orchestra
          Seiji Ozawa

The latter did sound head and shoulders above the others
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Interesting - yes, I have some of his Chopin but for some reason had missed that he'd recorded Debussy....

Many thanks for this, Cali - an unknown version (to me ) of a marvellous piece

Indeed... worth investigating. I had it on my shelves together with the Janssons plus Stephen Layton and Polyphony (which I love - esp the unaccompanied motets which are also on the disc - but it didn't get a look in ...

                ... trop britannique, doubtless )

The problem with this programme appears to be the candidates for the shortlist . For example. the splendid EMI Poulenc Gloria with Fremaux not on it .

Perhaps they should run their selections by you beforehand, to see if you approve.

Well done - perhaps your most risible comment ever despite the strong competition in your 1379 posts .

Is there a firestorm of similar criticism attendant on the programme's webpage Cali or do our French neighbours more easily accept what the programme is trying to do?

I'm with Barbs about the importance of the shortlist but I can't see how you resolve it. I wish Radio 3 would at least have a go at doing it this way (did I hear Wilfred Pickles just then?)

Spat aside, I think you're onto something here. Seems to me that there is too much convention in these things. Someone like Sinopoli or Gergiev, decides to do something slightly different with a Mahler 5 or some-such, and people's heckles rise.

This French radio programme sounds great. But it is what it is. It is not IRR or some such magazine. It's different.

Never been a fan of one size fits all.

I might try to tune in, but at best I can only manage Franglaise.

I assume this programme is in French.
