I enjoyed the Estampes podcast while on holiday last month - confusingly, in Italy. Blechacz's triumph didn't surprise me: I bought the cd soon after it came out, and am very impressed by his playing. I also rather liked the extracts that I heard from their runner-up, a young Japanese player new to me, Kotaro Fukuma.

Many thanks for these summaries & surprises, Caliban
Any chance of your making a regular feature of this, in your own time naturally
Do they pass judgement weekly or monthly?

Plus there's the 'embargo' period, so as not to spoil the enjoyment of others who may be catching up. For that reason, I don't think it would be right yet to post the result of the Alpensinfonie 'Tribune' which I couldn't resist listening to this week... A MAJOR SURPRISE for me - A Stunning Winner which I didn't even know existed !!
......Suspense.....
However I can talk about a December 2013 programme, on Poulenc's Gloria - wonderful listening whilst bowling along the empty roads of rural France!!
The versions listened to were: Dutoit, Pretre, Corboz, Jansons (RCO live) and Paavo Järvi... plus the chosen winner:
Kathleen Battle, soprano
Tanglewood Festival Chorus
Boston Symphony Orchestra
Seiji Ozawa
The latter did sound head and shoulders above the others"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I'm with Barbs about the importance of the shortlist but I can't see how you resolve it. I wish Radio 3 would at least have a go at doing it this way (did I hear Wilfred Pickles just then?)

This French radio programme sounds great. But it is what it is. It is not IRR or some such magazine. It's different.
Never been a fan of one size fits all.
I might try to tune in, but at best I can only manage Franglaise.
I assume this programme is in French.
