Yes indeed and that was my point that the drawback was like running the Derby and restricting it to six horses and excluding several fancied contenders .

That does not mean that the fact that the recordings are discussed and considered in depth is to be lightly dismissed. That strikes me as a strength.

One wonders whether a programme could work like that in a way that the new interactive BBC would like - listeners are invited to e-mail in their favourite recordings of a piece and the six most popular choices are then considered ?

One is, I suppose, very dependent on the quality of the editors choosing the " six " - fro example a Brahms Requiem without the Klemperer , or a Franck Symphony without the Monteux say would deservedly lead to steam from the ears .

The programme on Mozart's Jupiter Symphony were all HIP recordings. It is, I believe, an excellent approach.

I've been listening to this podcast today and it is a complete joy. I can understand why No.3 got short shrift in terms of the way the conductor pulled the tempi around, but it was an engaging approach and the orchestral sound was gorgeous. One to sample further, I suspect.

It was recent versions of the Cello Concerto not the Violin Concerto .

Just caught up with the TCD from a couple of weeks ago on Mahler's 5th. An revelatory programme! Surprises throughout and some rethinking required about performances of this favourite work of mine! A bit early to give the game away in case regulars haven't listened yet... Anyway, I'm listening to it a second time so as to hear the extracts this time knowing who's playing and conducting.

Used a recent trip to listen to a couple of these podcasts of which I have a big backlog.

Most surprising: the Debussy Estampes... It's from back in February, so I think the embargo has passed!

The much-vaunted Jean-Efflam Bavouzet got very short shrift on a 'blind listen' (and indeed sounded lack-lustre). The dazzling winner was a real outsider, Rafal Blechacz http://www.amazon.co.uk/Debussy-Esta...t_mus_ep_dpi_3 His 'Soirée dans Grenade' blew the rest into the dust !!

Last week was Eine Alpensinfonie - heaven't listened yet.... looking forward to that one, Alpie !!


(Incidentally, the answer re Mahler 5 was that Kubelik and the DG Bavarian Radio orchestra performance 'won' but by a very short head from ... Dudamel and the Venezuelan youngsters. They really sounded fantastic and idiomatic, heard blind! And on the same footing, Bernstein and VPO in the famous (and I thought my favourite) version, sounded self indulgent and mawkish! Remarkable programme, that.)

By the way I have the Kubelik - it was my very first recording of Mahler 5 on a DG Walkman cassette. - not a patch on Lenny or Sir John IMO . Rondo in particular too light for my taste .

I bought the Kubelik on the strength of the programme - I love it !

Must give it some time, and then listen to the Bernstein again - comparison of even lengthy extracts can be cruel.

I already had the Simon Bolivar recording and thought it was the real deal from the moment I heard it
