Yes indeed and that was my point that the drawback was like running the Derby and restricting it to six horses and excluding several fancied contenders .
That does not mean that the fact that the recordings are discussed and considered in depth is to be lightly dismissed. That strikes me as a strength.
One wonders whether a programme could work like that in a way that the new interactive BBC would like - listeners are invited to e-mail in their favourite recordings of a piece and the six most popular choices are then considered ?
One is, I suppose, very dependent on the quality of the editors choosing the " six " - fro example a Brahms Requiem without the Klemperer , or a Franck Symphony without the Monteux say would deservedly lead to steam from the ears .
