    Rattle Mahler 3

I purchased Rattle's Mahler set cheaply from Amazon and there's some very good stuff in there including the 2nd, 8th and 10th.

Last night I listened to the 3rd and really struggled with the finale. I normally like a bit of rubato and therefore enjoy conductors such as Jochum and Furtwangler in the 19th Century repertoire and people like Tennstedt and Bernstein in Mahler. However Rattle's finale made me feel rather seasick as I couldn't really feel a clear pulse. Has anyone else had the same experience?

I don't want to start a Rattle knocking thread as I find much to admire about him but rather wanted to test my reaction to this specific movement.

Well I've certainly go my fingers crossed. Who knows, he may live up to best expectations in the performance to be broadcast in about 18 minutes time. The recording witht he CBSO was quite while back and at least he got the night-bird calls right.

Haven't got to the finale as I write but its a corker of a recording, presumably the same source and quality as the BPO website.

Agreed, and if the oboe hinaufziehen was not quite perfect, it was not far off. Something a little more subtle, reflecting more closely Nathalie Stutzmann's "O Mensch!", would have been appropriate, I feel. I am really enjoying this though. Let's hope the finale maintains the high standard. Sounds good so far.
