    Susan Chilcott remembered

On the tenth anniversary of her tragically early death, Opus Arte have released a CD of Susan Chilcott in recital with Iain Burnside. It combines her previously released recordings of Copland songs with extracts from her final recital at La Monnaie with Burnside. This podcast of Burnside, Fiona Maddocks and Chilcott's husband David Sigall talking to James Jolly was made at a memorial gathering for her at ROH. Iain Burnside spoke movingly about her in an interview in the Telegraph in 2009.

I saw her twice with WNO - early on as Cherubino, and just 3 months before her death as Jenufa, with Mackerras conducting. I knew nothing about her, but her performance was devastating in the pathos she brought to the part - "coruscating" and "tender" are words Fiona Maddocks uses to describe the qualities she could command. She would undoubtedly have gone on to be a major star, her discography at the time she died tragically small.

Indeed - she was just turned 40. Iain Burnside, as I recall, had a close professional partnership with her.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
