    Charity Shop Staples....

As per the buying-against-prejudice thread, which "core classical" CDs/LPs do folk see a huge number of? (Russell W, Kat J and the gang don't count!)

I would propose the Firkusny / Steinberg Emperor Concerto on CfP LP

      On LP

Holst-The Planets- Sargent - BBC Symphony in various editions
Elgar -Cello Concerto - Barbirolli/DuPre LSO
Nothing wrong with them. They probably belonged to people of a certain generation now passing on.
A lot of World Record Club reissues

        OMG! I hate that cd!

The two I found 'trending' were Nicola Benedetti's Syzmanowski violin concerto. I have a dozen copies I bought for a pound a pop. Great playing but goodness knows what people who bought it 'blind' must have thought. The other is the Gorekski third symphony with David Zinman and Dawn Upshaw. Another fine recording but I can imagine it being bought as a present for the unwary!

The EMI Eminence label is normally well represented.

          John Lanchberry suddenly becomes ubiquitous.

Like Big Issue sellers and their dogs: 'No charity shop is genuine without one'.

I suspect some local authorities have a bye-law that requires one to be stocked.

There's a possibly even commoner 'free sampler' CD of Mozart for a mail-order(?) series of 'X's greatest hits' intro's to Great Composers. You don't see very many of the others in the series though, which may I suppose indicate that the discs went down well with those who subscribed.

[Have to confess I bought a copy of this Mozart sampler as possible brain-food for small daughter. It may have worked (she's a bright little demon at school now) but her musical tastes - using the term loosely - are now more in the One Direction direction]
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Oh yes, same here. I've even seen several of these in the same charity shop. BBC Music Mag CDs are very common round here as well. I've got every one since the first issue and badly need to have a cull so some could be ending up in a charity shop.

Surely various Petrol Station Classics CDs of standard repertoire with the Llubljana SO or Bulgarian Festival Orchestra conducted by luminaries like Anton Nanut, Alfred Stoltz and Alberto Lizzio are a sine qua non...

Actually, my bête noire are double CDs that only have one disc in the box! I once walked into a charity shop in Edinburgh that had TEN double sets and not one was complete! Much howling and gnashing of teeth!

Saw the Bedford Herring (Naxos re-issue of the Collins Classics recording) in a charity shop today. It was priced at £2. As I already have the composer's own recording of the work I gave it a miss. If it's still there tomorrow I will check that both CDs are in the box, and if so ...

Was one of them Sinopoli's Elgar? Someone stole the box and CD2 from my car but CD1 was in the CD player....

Of course his Elgar 1 is tremendous but the 2nd is unorthodox to say the least so at least I kept the best disc!
