Much more so: Apart from prescription and over-the-counter medicines Pharmacies sell only a range of cosmetics and perfumes, and their opening hours are strictly controlled. Conversely, it is possible to obtain on prescription many items that UK residents would expect to pay for, including spa visits, although the insurance companies are beginning to tighten up on things.

Also, it may come as a surprise to those whose shopping is limited to tourist areas to find that most shops are closed on Sundays. There is currently a fight by DIY suppliers to open on Sundays.

I remember Boots selling records. I bought several Classics for Pleasure LPs in my teens, including Peter Katin's Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1, which I recently reacquired on CD. Boots was the only store in my town that sold records, so I suppose Superdrug selling CDs is the natural modern-day equivalent.

A new law in France aims to offer protection for small bookstores against competition from Amazon. Lawmakers effectively decided that Amazon's free shipping gives the online retailer too much of an edge.

I assume it's made possible by deregulation in the UK, pharmacies in France being regulated (like almost everything else).
"sold" is here used very much in the past tense. I think it was around ten years ago that Superdrug was selling CDs.
