Have you heard most of the music that gets played at sports venues?!

Rod Stewarts "Sailing" still a very popular choice among stadium PA controllers.
Yes, music, brutally interrupted by Sir Winston Churchill after a few seconds!!!!

The responses above are of the if you do not like this " music" then that must be the listener's fault not that of the composer school .

      It is pretentious junk IMO

The problem with this kind of statement is that .....
I have yet to meet an enthusiast of Cage, Feldman, Xenakis, Merzbow, Lachenmann etc who would dismiss Bach as "pretentious junk" even if they didn't like it ! .... So why is that that some people find it hard to accept that music is a very wide thing indeed ? And can have many functions ?

          ???

The only "response above" is coco's mention of Rod Stewart and Churchill - a bit harsh on a newcomer, Barbie.

Chacun ... Up to now I have found RVW to be very much more interesting, though I'm very slowly coming round to like some Delius. Incidentally, a lot of music by Delius sounds a lot more beautiful in live performances than it does on CD, and beauty of sound and texture is a feature of Delius IMO. This still doesn't take away from RVW though.

Possibly you might give Delius more credit for actually completing both a cello concerto, and a double violin/cello concerto - http://www.theguardian.com/music/tom...rtos-recording though Stephen Isserlis and David Mathhews have worked on a version of a "concerto" by RVW - http://www.allthingsstrings.com/News...ello-Concertos I have found that the double concerto by Delius fills up just over 20 minutes quite well.

I love the Delius Double Concerto and Cello concerto. Infact, I am rather a Delian fan, really!

I don't rank Delius amongst my favourite composers but it doesn't mean I dismiss his music. quite the opposite.
I love "Sunset" and other songs he wrote and were later arranged for cello and piano, the cello concerto is rather nice, I have several documentaries on his life including the Ken Russell one. I have several records too, my favourite is the Fenby Legacy- Music by Delius.
I find this recording is rather beautiful:

Except that the pieces played by Frances-Marie Uitti are not by Lachenmann as far as I can tell, in that video. The significant thing is her use of two bows. She has had pieces written for her by many composers, such as Nono and Scelsi. The video includes some of her own music. I did travel to see her perform live - just to check that she really does play with two bows.

You want some easy Lachenmann - chosen at random - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFHJCROKwI0

Incidentally Mr GG's suggestion about Apocalyptica is terrific!

I quite like the Delius cello concerto, of which I have several versions (Du Pre', JLW to mention a few), but I struggle with the violin concerto. I have a recording of the double concerto with Tasmin Little and Paul Watkins and violin concerto with Tasmin, which I bought because it was an SACD, beautifully played music, but after 8 minutes or so, the violin concerto does my head in! I do prefer melodic music, but that's me!

                        !
Zoe Martlew told me that she met Frances-Marie Uitti and tried to find out the secret of how she plays with the two bow technique but apparently she (Uitti) doesn't give much away.

Glad you liked the Apocalyptica , I was introduced to them by a mate who plays in the Philharmonia (which according to some probably is grounds for dismissal )

That's the first time i've heard of Delius described as not "melodic music " ????? bizarre ears

The violin concerto is quite magnificent - when played by the late Ralph Holmes on Unicorn - now on Heritage.
