Are they still there? They were supposed to be a time limited offer, though the links might still work.

Danish radio also had some downloads - I think it was in that Mozart year. Then of course there was the "famous" BBC download experiment with Beethoven symphonies. I tried them again recently, and the Eroica sounded good, but there was a glitch in the last movement. Bit rot must have set in somewhere - shame.

I'm not aware of any radio stations doing downloads right now.

Not going there today, in this thread, Bryn!

PS: Actually will make a comment. The quality of authorised downloads may, or not, be better than by other methods. It all depends .....
If the broadcasters want you to have the material they may put in a little effort to make the download good ..... or not!

Podcasts are downloads, aren't they? The BBC Radio 3 site links to them as "Free downloads".

I was checking out possible recordings of Tristan & Isolde on Amazon, & noticed that the Runnicles recording was half the price as a download as it was for a CD. I'd rather buy a CD than have the faff of downloading & then transferring to CDs, but paying double the price for the privilege seems a bit steep.

Mp3 downloads should never really cost even half the price of a CD. Given that around 700 to 800 kbps of a CDs data rate is used directly to represent the audio, an Amazon mo3 at an average data rate of around 256kbps can hardly hope match up that closely to the audio quality of a CD. There pretty decent, but they are not really "CD quality". FLAC and other lossless data reduction options are a different matter. They might reasonably be process at a level similar to that of the CD audio they derive from.

I went on emusic this morning, and discovered that there's a Tennstedt LPO performance of Mahler 2 there now for under £3. It is not, I think, a studio recording, so it may be the one I enthused about a while back which I heard on Radio 3.

Also, I previously forgot to mention this site from Clive Heath - http://www.cliveheathmusic.co.uk/transcriptions_07.php - though the transcriptions are mostly of rather old recordings. Some are interesting, nevertheless.

It's the live LPO label recording and is excellent. Bit rate is a little low, but then it's dead cheap! There's an even cheaper (only 4 tracks) live Mahler 6 from the same source.

Anyway, very much enjoying the music, which is the main thing
