I have the old EMI France recordings with Jeanne Marie Darre ( don't ask me to type acute accents !) but am on the look out for a modern stereo version to complement that classic set .

Any recommendations - Roge and Collard seem a great deal cheaper than the Hough .

I think Hough/Oramo is probably well worth the extra money. Rogé himself is excellent but there is some rancid woodwind tuning in No. 4. The Collard set I don't know.

There a nice 2-CD set on Sony with Philippe Entremont, and L'Orchestre du Capitole du Toulouse/Michel Plasson.

OK - the recorded sound is just a tad under par, but nevertheless, worth a spin.

The Collard set is excellent, especially No. 4. Rubinstein for me in No. 2

The Roge set can be had for £1.37 + p&p on the Amazon marketplace. I don't think you can go too far wrong at that price.

I had the Roge, but gave it away when I was given the Hough a few years ago. The Hough is, I think, better played (especially the orchestra) and recorded, but slightly more hard-driven sometimes - I rather miss Roge's more relaxed approach in places.

As it happens, I wouldn't mind getting the Darre set, if it's available at a sensible price. I don't know the Collard, but agree with ff's approval of Rubinstein's no.2, played with real sparkle.

Funny thing about 'memorable' tunes - its seems to me that earworms are not by any means universal. I can't recall any tunes from Nos 1, 3 and 5 despite having heard them all several times. I have some sympathy with Cortot, who played only No. 4. He considered it a masterpiece and the others not worth bothering with.

Another point about Rogé's set is his idiosyncratic articulation of the main theme of 2/iii. It is quite at variance with the composer's autograph MS: see http://javanese.imslp.info/files/img..._Autograph.pdf p.116
