I got one too. I've only listened once after an appalling day at work but what penetrated my shocked state sounded superb. It's on my weekend pile. (When we're not going to the Festival concerts).

I haven't seen the amazon page; the Testament website mentions that it was Sunday Times CD of the week or similar."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It was the best performance in Abravenal's Utah Mahler cycle, Horenstein's Live recording with the NPO is phenomenal (some particularly fine Horn playing here)

... the same performance (I think) - I don't find the sound "insufferable" at all: Mono, and with "audience participation" but one of those performances that takes you right to the heart of the work, so that you forget about any recording shortcomings. (If you can cope with Furtwangler's La Scala Ring, this presents no problems!)Numquam Satis!

Reverting to Horenstein, this article is illuminating vis à vis the sound quality of the various issues:
I have the Descant issue which sounds fine - as in:

Who was that horn player though??

Great news on the Gielen influx - mine also arrived today (the joys of Amazon-Prime!). Be interested to hear responses to it!
(Thanks also for the notes on the Horenstein).
