Since I fall into the last category, I tuned off before he began. Sounds like the right decision.

In fairness the apps did sound genuinely interesting.

For the rest it was a pity that he contented himself with enthusing to the converted. It would have been very valuable for someone to have done a survey of the various digital formats and delivery/listening options, giving the pros and cons of each, but then JJ might only have a superficial knowledge of the field.

I heard it, but it didnt convince me to switch from shelves of CDs and LPs to downloads. Of course, the actual discs take up space, but I've got space. And he didnt really get to grips with the big potential problem with downloads, which is that you dont own the recording. It is available to you for just as long as someone else decides to make it so. No, as long as they keep issuing CDs I'll keep buying them. It is true that this means I cant hear new recordings which are only issued as downloads, but there seems to be plenty of other stuff on disc to keep me happy.

The Stephen Hough Liszt lecture/recital and the "Let's Make a Britten Fugue" sounded excellent; but not enough to make this old fogey want to invest in the new medi(um/a). Thirty years ago, I'd've been far keener.

And did I hear correctly - £9.99 for just the Scherzo of the Beethoven's Ninth?

I'm not sure if this is limited to Pristine Classical, but I once heard a recording they had revived and bought it from them as a CD. Andrew Rose (I THINK I've got the name right) was wonderfully helpful. Do other 'downloaders' offer the same service?

The one I bought was the 1938 première of Barber's Adagio for Strings with Toscanini and the NBC SO. Another one which interests me is the Toscanini Verdi Requiem, which I used to have on LP. I believe they have done something to give a sort of stereo effect.

I'm afraid I didnt note what was on offer for £9.99. With respect to availability of downloads, I've just remembered that if there is really something that I must have and is only available as a download, I know a man who will make a CD of it for me, for a small fee.

It is interesting that a new technology doesnt necessarily eliminate the old, even if it is superior. There is no doubt that CDs are superior to LPs: more music in less space, and comparatively indestructible. However, not only does my local hi-fi shop still sell second-hand LPs, he also sells brand new ones. These are both re-issues of classic discs such as the RCA SB series from the 1960s, and brand new releases by pop and folk artists.

There is no doubt that CDs are superior to LPs.

There's a thought to open a whole can of worms. I don't necessarily disagree, but I know plenty of people who would fight to the death to express the opposite view.

The ambient stereo version is optional. In the case of the Verdi, it was recorded in mono twice at the same time and both sources were brought together and give some semblance of early stereo. Is it known as "accidental stereo"? There's some Elgar cond Elgar which Mark Obert-Thorn included on one of the Naxos Historicals.

No, I ought to have mentioned all these are for out of print items. They were on CD, and until they get re-issued on Helios, you can get a one-off. And that's what Amazon and Archiv do, too. As with the Pristine items they're for people who don't want to get on the download treadwheel.

It sounds to me (without hearing it, of course) that the untouched mono version might be preferable - rather like the earlier Beatles LPs!
