I picked up a second hand copy of Barbirolli and the LSO live in Ein Heldenleben a few days before the studio recording for £1.50 .

A thrilling account and the voltage a good deal higher than the estimable studio recording . Highly recommended.

Bit of a download bargain, the complete Tchaikovsky symphonies and other works by the Gothenburg SO/Jarvi on BIS on UK iTunes, for 5.99 UKP.

Currently reaching the end of the download is Christian Thielemann's complete Vienna Ring cycle, in 24/96, bought from Qobuz during their 'Studio Master' time-limited promotion for the ridiculously low price of €39.96 (€9.99 per opera). I don't know when I'll get round to listening to it, but I just had to click the Buy button rather than miss such an offer.

I attended this concert. It was a tremendous occasion, with the Mozart Symphony no.36 (also on the disc.)
Unfortunately the Strauss Vier Letzte Lieder (with Schwarzkopf) which ended the first half, was never issued. I can only imagine that Madame would not allow it to be issued.

As it most often was in his last years, JB was much better in live performance than in the studio.

I'm loving Lotte Lehmann doing Schumann's Dichterliebe and Frauenliebe on Naxos Historical. Only £2.99 among many discounts on offer at Naxos Direct at the moment. No postal charges and it arrived the next day.

slarty - how fascinating - lucky you ! I wonder now, as Betty Blackhead ,as Ken Dodd once called her ,is dead - whether we can hope to hear that recording ?

Ein Heldenleben has always been a work i struggled with until hearing this recording - it convinced me of its greatness.
