Recent CD/ buys - downloads recommendations thread

I note that although we have a new releases and a bargains thread we don't have one for recent buys that forumites might wish to recommend .

    So here goes

Tabakova- String Paths - very beautiful mesmerising contemporary music from the young Bulgarian composer

Stravinsky Rite of Spring - Philadelphia/Ormandy 1955 - Sony it may be mono but has knocked my socks off unlike any other performance I have heard for quite a while . The Petrushka is dazzling too and as for the Firebird Suite

Schumann - Fantasiestucke and Etudes Symphoniques- Freddy Kempf - thoughtful interesting and moving Schumann playing.

Brahms--Second and 3rd Symphonies--Szell/Cleveland Purchased for 16 cents from a charity store. Terrible remastering, badly in need of a refurb.
SFSO/MTT Blu Ray Gala--Copland Billy The Kid, Mendelssohn Concerto with Perlman, Britten Young Person, and John Adams Short Ride In A Fast Machine. Recorded in 24/96 DTS 5.1, an staggeringly good display of the potential of Blu Ray as a High Resolution
source, with great performances, and a very annoying announcer that cannot be edited out.

That Ormandy Rite has gotten great reviews in some of the print I have seen about recent Rite compilations.

      Petroc gets everywhere !

Interested by that Szell Brahms . Not a composer I associate with him but as a great condcutor of the Schumann symphonies it makes sense .

I do recommend the very cheap Ormandy Stravinsky disc - a complete delight . It is strikingly refreshing .

£8.49 for a download of Klemperer conducting Bruckner symphonies 4 through to 9. I had No 6 as an lp and look forward to exploring the others.

I bought that Klemperer box having always loved his 6 and 7 but have not got round to listening to it yet - must try this week.

The September BBC MM is devoted to Horowitz, and the cover CD is of the recital he gave in the Royal Festival Hall in May 1982. This was his first London concert in 31 years. This is perhaps not playing for everyday listening, but fascinating none the less, although I found his wayward approach to Chopin's Ballade in g minor rather hard to take. The BBC recording is quite good, although it is apparent that the wide dynamics in the playing presented a few problems leading to a rather hollow sound in the quieter passages.
This was a historic event, and the CD is well worth having as a tribute to an amazing pianist, warts and all !

Well there is the classic Curzon 1st concerto, to say nothing of the even finer Fleisher...I don't think I've ever heard the tuttis played with more fire and energy

Horowitz 'live' has always been a more exciting, slightly dangerous, gamier dish

I look forward to the BBCMM CD and to this box ...

Mrs. PG and I are listening to a cd we bought in Peebles this afternoon. Beethoven piano concertos 3 & 4 played by Pollini with the Vienna Phil under Karl Bohm. Loverly music making From all concerned. A bargain at 75p!

I bought their collaboration in No 5 recently for a song too - very grand, not for everyday but very enjoyable full fat Beethoven.

No-one else into PETRASSI yet? As I mentioned on the WAYLTN thread, The Chandos/Noseda CD of Magnificat and Psalm 9 is a good companion to the Naxos/La Vecchia issue with the Coro di Morti, Inni Sacri and very appealing early orchestral works. Just taken delivery of the Piano Concerto on Stradivarius (Alberti/Tamayo), just about to play it. "It is certainly sprawling, but it sprawls so gorgeously" said the IRR reviewer. Sounds perfect for me!

I didn't hear the extract on yesterday's CD Review but, on the basis of a rave review in the Weekend FT and despite my resolution to buy no more Mahler CDs, I've just ordered from Testament the 1994 Mahler 7th from Michael Gielen and the BPO (he was the sub for an ailing Klaus Tennstedt). Loved Gielen's Südwestfunk performance of it live and equally love his recording of it so am keenly looking forward to this BPO version.

I ordered it too after hearing an extract on CD Review! It sounded superb. I love the 'honks' from the faggots in the second Nachtmusik.

The 2012 2-CD re-master by Bob Ludwig of Frank Zappa's Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar. Now to compare and contrast with the Bob Stone 2-CD re-master of 1989.

Anyone here heard the 2013 re-master of Trout Mask Replica yet? If so, how big are the differences?
