Thanks for that, Waldhorn, I had no idea Nixa survived into the CD era. I just checked and all my Nixa LPs are mono. I know that a lot of recording companies were recording in stereo for some time prior to 1958, but only started to issue stereo discs in 1958. If that was about the time Pye took over Nixa, and then shortly after gave up on LPs, it may be that they had some unissued stereo Nixa recordings. Has anyone ever seen a stereo Nixa LP?

The Pye Nixa recordings eventually became EMI property and many were issued on the Phoenixa label. Since then, Dutton has become one of the best source of the Nixa Barbirolli recordings.

Oddly enough, I bought a Phoenixa disc yesterday in a charity shop of an all Mendelssohn programme with the LPO conducted by Boult. The sound quality was ok but this was not really the LPOs glory days and Boult seemed o be driving them rather hard in the 'Scottish' symphony.

I have some of these Phoenixa discs, mainly from the early 90s but they seemed to disappear from the catalogue quite quickly. Lots of Barbirolli.

I have two Nixa (Stereo) CDs of Barbirolli and the Hallé,
1) NixCD 6003: 'English Music' - Delius, Butterworth, Elgar and Bax;
2) NixCD 6002: Elgar 1st Symphony plus a totally wonderful, 'incandescent' Introduction and Allegro that IMV surpasses JB's later EMI recording with that pick-up band, the 'Sinfonia of London'.

There were some historic stereo recordings for Nixa with Boult and the LPO. These are available on First Hand Remasters in two volumes which include Walton 1, Elgar 2, Britten's Matinees and Soirees Musicales, Elgar's Falstaff, Berlioz Overtures and all the Schumann Symphonies, 6 CDs in total and a great find.

Oh, that's a shame, umslopos: I was thinking that there might be vinyl collectors like stamp collectors who pay more for flawed specimens than they do for mint condition.

When working for WHS as a student I had a disc returned by a customer because it had two identical sides (two Side As and no Side B). I recall it was an MFP entitled something like Great War Movie Themes. This would be what you are looking for fhg, but I have no idea if it would have any value like a flawed stamp. I suspect not, but feel free to tell me I missed the chance of millions when I slung it into the 'Return to Record Co' pile
