Teldec! Maybe I like my Schumann delivered with more weight but I didn't take to Harnoncourt.

Ha! Yes, I've got Telarc on the brain, having thrilled to Mackerras/SCO in Brahms 1st Serenade & Verdi's Quattro Pezzi Sacri with Robert Shaw.

Oddly enough I thrilled to Harnoncourt's Schumann again precisely because of the prominence of the brass/winds in climaxes and the excellent fullness & impact in the bass registers. But each to her own of course.

Why did you think that, JLW? I thought it was a most exce4llant performance, all the musicians in that orchestra were at one with each other, as well as the conductor, and I do not normally like Schumann!?!?!?

I know the Szell set is still available separately, but those potentially interested might like to know that it also figures as part of the Sony Masterworks Heritage Collection box:

Quite a bargain for 29 CDs.

I recently mixed up Teldec/Telarc when I was recommending a Previn recording of Brahms German Requeim. Why did Telefunken ever feel the need to change their name?

Lots of Schumann threads around here , but this seems the place for a another reminder that JEG's Symphony cycle is due out again on 10/02 in a 5-disc Collectors' Edition with the choral works Paradies und die Peri and Requiem fur Mignon...

I have their Schubert set, a real bargain on Brilliant Classics. It's a bit uneven but the playing is always piquant.

Piquant is such a good descriptor in this case, rfg - thank you

The Szell cycle has never sounded better than in their short-lived emergence on Sony SACD* - stupendous! (Pure SACD, not even a hybrid...)

It's a shame that the Brilliant re-issue didn't include the two 'In the Italian Style' overtures that appeared on the original Nimbus discs.

Yes, grrrr...I only have the symphonies set and missed out on the choral stuff.

I found that it was JEG's recording that really motivated me, unusually so with this composer's symphonies etc.

Outstandingly natural sound, and it includes one of the best Overture,Scherzo and Finale(s) I've heard. Just try a bit at a time as a download.
Am doing just that, following the recent Schumann 4 BAL...

I absolutely LOVE Dausgaard's way with the Spring Symphony! Tempo choices and orchestral flair fantastic.

Currently to pinned my chair each early morning by those extraordinary Hanover Band Horns! Leaping out at me from centre-left...wonderful!

Some reservations about the longer line... but another fascinating, very well and analytically-recorded cycle with Goodman, and an altogether outstanding 1841/4th, one of the best I've heard in a strong field.(Harnoncourt, JEG, Dausgaard etc)... and also omitted (like too much else that is distinctive) from the recent BaL....

The O-S-F is top-notch too. Need more time with the 2 and 3...but the clarity, the close-up view upon the terracing of the orchestra is exceptional. You could almost write down the score from the recording (well, with the requisite aural gifts of course..).

I’ve been recommended the JEGGERS and Sawallisch. I may buy both!
