So sad to hear about Calum MacDonald's recent passing. One of my favourite writers.
I had missed the news of this - he died on 27th May. A generous-hearted (and generous-brained) writer about Music with a wide range of enthusiasms: anyone who admires the work of John Foulds and Havegal Brian has much to be thankful for Calum/Malcolm MacDonald's indefatigable work promoting performances and understanding of their Music. His books on Brahms and Schoenberg, too, give evidence of detailed insight into the Music, profound love of it, and an enviable ability to communicate these to a wider public. He'd only just retired as Editor of Tempo, too, after 41 years championing the Music of the Twentieth Century in all its wonderful facets. I shall greatly miss further contributions to my Musical knowledge and awareness from this quite remarkable man.
