Originally posted by silvestrione View PostDoes anyone know how it compares with the much cheaper Fischer-Dieskau Bk of Lieder? E.g. I have the huge EMI Schubert lieder box, and would like a book of texts to follow (the texts are on one of the CDs, but I don't find that too manageable).
I have to say that on a cold winter afternoon, I do enjoy a quiet sit down with some Brahms or Schubert and translations on this site to hand.
Magic.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

The booklets accompanying the individual Hyperion Schubert Edition releases contain texts, the Wigmore translations, and exhaustive commentaries on each song by Graham Johnson. The commentaries were not released with the complete edition, but are being published in an expanded form in three volumes by Yale University Press in the spring of 2014. A must for any true Schubertian, but it will probably cost a small fortune so better start saving now!

You can, of course, look up the song notes on the Hyperion website, so if the book is prohibitively expensive I might opt out, (even though having it as a book would be much more convenient.)

Oh, what a surprise! Hadn't previously realised that the EMI Wolf Anniversary boxset was quite different from the EMI HW Society, complete edition 1931.38 which has long since been on my shelves, initially as an LP boxset, finally as a 5CD remastered set. Omission will be rectified at the end of the month. Due thanks for the alert here.
Time, too, to revisit Frank Walker's 1968 revised substantial biography, Hugo Wolf. Literally a consummation of words and music.
