    Beethoven Violin Concerto - Adolf Busch/Statsradiofoniens SO/Grondahl

From a live performance in 1949 but Danish Radio only had one recorder so seconds were missing at each side change . These have been filled ,almost imperceptibly from his 1942 studio recording .Both Robert Matthew Walker in IRR and Rob Cowan in Gramophone have raved about this record .

With good reason - it is a quite stupendous performance . Terrific momentum , with pretty fast speeds for the old days and oh what beautiful playing from Busch - and such an exciting account from the very first bar . His own cadenzas are different but interesting.

The Larghetto is immensely moving , the finale a wonderful romp . It is one of those rare records that you want to shout about !

Right into the premier league of Beethoven Violin Concertos for me - with Menuhin/Furtwangler in 1947 and Perlman/Giulini .

As much as I rate Oistrakh,Faust,Hahn,Francescatti ,Haendel,Stern,Heifetz,Kreisler and Huberman's accounts - they were always my top two and this one joins it .

    Buy Buy Buy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer recordings where the Orchestra employs transverse flutes.
Sorry, bad joke, this weekend I had to attend an all recorder concert given by a class of 3rd Graders.
You didn't mention Oistrakh in your greatest hits lineup, whose two recordings are my personal favorites.

No but isn't that the one he refused to allow to be issued but which bits of have been used to patch this 1949 account ?

I forgot to mention that the Romances are very fine too . Spirited and characterful not just pretty.

Not totally relevant, I know, but I have to say that Leonid Kogan with Silvestri on EMI is a stunner of a performance.....

Yes, but I guess after the peons of praise on here my expectations may have been too high. Though I havent listened to them for ages my memories of the Kulenkampff and Menuhin/Furtwangler are still glowing. Sorry!
