DSCH String Quartets: the Pacifica cycle is very tempting....

I know this quartet have had a few mentions about the Forum, and this series is making my wallet twitch - superb performances, by all accounts, interesting couplings and great looking Soviet-era artwork.

Latest one reviewed in the Telegraph today: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/m...et-review.html

    Should I sink 40 quid into Volumes 1 - 3 ...?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes. DublinJimbo will say yes, too.

All their discs are on Qobuz, such as 5, 6, 7, and 8: http://player.qobuz.com/#!/album/0735131912723

Whether you'll ever acknowledge this post or not, however, is another question.

Cheers. I'd definitely want the physical CD - enticing objects...

I heard them in Chicago a year ago performing a pair of these works in a concert. It was very memorable. As to whether or not you need to spend 40 Quid for a memorable experience, there are some cheaper cycles available. Do you already own the Fitzwilliam Cycle? A used copy of the entire cycle is going for $13 on Amazon here. That would be a very difficult bargain to top

Vol. 3 is available via the amazon.co.uk marketplace for £11.45 including p&p. Easiest to search for "The Soviet Experience Vol. 3".

I have the recording of string quartets 1-4, some great playing, sometimes in the 3rd quartet i prefer a bit more bite in those quick inner movements but some beautiful playing in the slow movements. Cant really beat the Borodin quartet in the 3rd though but the Pacifica are good overall. I heard them play Beethoven's Quartet in B minor the other week on the lunch time concert and it was like hearing it for the 1st time, i hope they record those late Beethoven quartets.

Most definitely. And Volume 4 (Shostakovich Quartets 13–15 + Schnittke Quartet 3) is due out in October. I'll download it direct from Cedille as soon as it's available.
