Thielemann's Viennese Ring: for anyone needing one more for the road...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
I agree with Beef Oven. I am most interested as Waltraud Meier is singing Seiglinde and I believe Katharina Delayman is singing Brunhilde. Sp will wait until the price drops.
.
I have the Austrian Radio broadcasts of this, and it was excellent. SUCH a pity though that the DVDs are only 2 discs` worth of excerpts rather than the full monty...

My guess would be that the DVD's will appear in a few months time thus inducing some to part with their hard-earned twice over for the same product....
"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
I do hope so, but I admit I`m rather doubtful. I remember reading something somewhere on the internet to the effect that a full video release had been vetoed by either Thielemann or Wesler-Most, but I`m afraid I can`t recall which or indeed why! Sorry, I know that`s less than half a tale...and I do hope I`m wrong.
I wasn't impressed with the Munich Ring highlights: compared Wintersturme (Die Walkure) with Karajan, and the singing was mediocre - Thielemann's soloists are no Regine Crespin or Jon Vickers...

I saw The Ring in Vienna in 2009 with Welser-Most conducting. I'm guessing this is the same production. If so, it was decent musically but not memorable visually or dramatically. It relied a fair amount on back-projection.

The allegation if this is to believed seems to be that Frankly W-M sat on the idea:

Interesting, thank you for the link. I wonder FWM wants a dvd Ring of his own - EMI issued his Zurich Tanhauser and Meistersinger, and I rather suspect the recent Hollander may follow. (Although perhaps they could issue the 1991/2 Sawallisch EMI production first which only came out on DVD in Japan)
