Agreed about the Russians, Rozh and Kondrashin above all (but the KK remains, sonically, a little thin and edgy, despite the later remasterings). But I'd put a word in for Kurt Sanderling's grimly implacable Berlin SO one from 1978 (Berlin Classics). Very good sound indeed from the Christuskirche, with an orchestra KS did a lot of great things with, playing at their peak - wonderfully full and velvety strings, close-set but spacious recording. But - probably not available separately... as ever, for best sound try to find the original BC one.

But since hearing Petrenko do it live, twice in the last three years, just up the road, I've felt no need to chase out his, or other recordings...

Sanderling is missing from my collection (I have his 5 & 8) so will search that out.

I heard Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra at the Proms in a terrific account of this symphony a few years ago. That and the 1986 Haitink are my two favourite live performances. Rostropovich and the LPO in a 1983 RFH concert are not far behind.

My first LP and only version for many years was Andrew Davis and LPO on Classics for Pleasure (sponsored by Wills Cigarettes!). I still have it but haven't played it for ages and can't remember what it's like. CD version is Haitink. We were really impressed by Petrenko and RLPO at Proms last summer.

Renewal of the A Davis on CD will not break the bank!

Jarvi and the SNO for me. One of my all time favourite symphonies to play and listen to.

Seconded - Jarvi's Chandos recordings of the Shostakovich symphonies are splendid .

Wasn't that impressed with any of the Jansons extracts.

Climactic phrasing not his forte. Haitink (Proms) and Petrenko pour moi.

Rather a notable example of Andrew and the pundit agreeing on everything I thought.

Came across the SNO version the other day, after forgetting it was in my collection. To use some common parlance one's gob was smacked!

I had it for so long it was a Woolies version of the Chandos recording.

Was this Andrew Davis' first recording? I remember I bought it on LP when it first came out and was thrilled to encounter this wonderful music

So did I. I'm not sure whether it was his first, but he made an LP of Proms 'Last Night' favourites at about the same time, which was the first I heard of him:

Karajan, Mravinsky, Petrenko, and Ormandy all satisfy my needs in this work.
Sorry Richard, in this thread I've lost track of which conductor you are not a fan. Haitink, maybe?

A few years ago I found myself saying that he's still the best alive, and indeed better than many who have gone on ahead.
I checked myself, and then decided that on balance I agreed with myself.

A lot depends on repertoire, though. Davis had the edge in Mozart. I often prefer HIPP performances, which rules out some of the big names.

This is the LP I have. I'm pretty sure it is the same recording as the issue referred to above by Cloughie. They've used the same photo of the conductor.

There's a bit of conductor confusion going on here!

I'm sure that Richard means Jansons and mentions the Firebird and Rite of Spring recording which I too find uninspiring.

Could be getting Andrew and Colin Davis mixed up as well?
