LvB Cello Sonatas

... sprog will be playing No 4 sometime this summer... i have the Brendels set somewhere in a box and must get it out!

in the meantime was listening to a snatch of Fournier and Schnabel [a bargain on emusic] and was captivated

wondered as to other boredees preferences in these pieces

I like some of the old Casals/Serkin performances, particularly op 69, but I agree that Fournier is wonderful. Of more modern recordings, that by Schiff and Perényi has impressed me.

I have not heard, but would like to hear, Piatigorsky and Solomon in these works - does anyone have any views on their recordings?

Wispelwey [Barak Norman 1710] and Komen [Broadwood 1823] on channel classics for me.

Anssi Karttunen [Banks 1770] and Tuija Hakkila [McNulty after Walter 1795] on apex also very attractive...

It was great to hear Brendels, father and son, at the Cheltenham Festival a few years ago. I have two very good CD sets - Richter/Rostropovich and Heinrich Schiff /Till Fellner

Rostropovich/Richter - du Pre/Barenboim - though the du pre/Kovacevich Nos 3 and 5 couplng is stupendous.

i once heard Bylsma on CR rReview, and also have a cd with him on and in both he scrap[ess woefully off pitch ... have i got the right Bylsma?

It was great to hear Brendels, father and son, at the Cheltenham Festival a few years ago. I have two very good CD sets - Richter/Rostropovich and Heinrich Schiff /Till Fellner

I have the Brendels' recording - it's well played and musically satisfying, but rather low-profile when set beside the Rostropovich/Richter.

Bylsma has recorded the Beethoven sonatas at least twice. In addition to that with Immerseel, he also recorded them with Malcolm Bilson. Which recordings did you hear?

.. and even older Casals from 1930 and 1939, in pretty good sound with Mieczyslaw Horszowski and Otto Schulhof (Op 69). I've just greatly enjoyed playing 1, 2 and 3.

I love Gulda and his recording with Fournier (a slightly unexpected pairing) seems to be a classic ...... tempting.
