Rachmaninov Piano Concerto recordings

This recording was made in 1957, and has never been out of the catalogue, an honour it shares with Beecham's Peer Gynt and Scheherezade. In the Ravel concerto there's a series of ascending and descending trills which Michelangeli plays with a standard of perfection I have never heard in any other performance.

Only Argerich comes close IMO.

I went for the second disc with the added Haydn even before my previous post was dry.

In 2 & 3, I would commend the above. Contains gasp-inducing moments aplenty - and for the right reasons, too - and the slow movements are moving without ever becoming sickly saccharine. The sound is truly impeccable despite its age. Available new for £4.46 from the Marketplace.

I adored the 2nd on this disc when I had it on LP some 30 years ago and played it to death and beyond. Since then, I've cooled considerably towards the Rachmaninov piano concertos and although I've got Ashkenazy's re-makes with Previn and Haitink they rarely get a hearing. For me the 1st and 4th are nowhere as good as the other two.

Yuja Wang has recorded the Second Concerto (& PagRhap) with Abbado, but not, as far as I can see, the Third.

And she's Chinese.

I think Abbado has recorded the Third Concerto only with Lazar Berman.
