I was lucky enough to be at 2, perhaps 3 of his Mahler 8 performances, and in one he brougth the stellar Munich based Julia Varady to enthrall us. I couldn't agree more with your comment, he had command of this piece, the closing stages were delivered with sure control, it felt absolutely right. Memories to be treasured. (A sharp contrast to some other performances I have experienced!).

I ordered that Dresden Elgar 1 - on first hearing I am rather disappointed - it is a bit noisy and bombastic for my tastes . Perhaps I have been listening to the King's Lynn Barbirolli too often recently . The Berlioz overtures are dynamite though. He must surely be the greatest Berlioz conductor in recorded history .

Picked up his Cgebouw new World for a song at the same time - now that is a lovely, songful fresh performance and what playing !

I was present at two of Sir Colin's Mahler 8 performances (both in the Royal Albert Hall) and agree absolutely with your comments. He did the Mahler 4 and Das Lied von der Erde but one of the more intriguing of the LSO concerts which Sir Colin was to have conducted, and which we will sadly not now hear, was Mahler 6 which was scheduled for September 25 2013, his 86th birthday.

I'd forgotten how good his Dvorak was (RCO and LSO). The RCO is dead cheap here:

There was a very fine Philips Duo of syms 7-9, c/w the Symphonic Varns (LSO), to which I will give a spin later.

I didnt know that Sir Colin Davis had recorded Dvorak's late symphonies. That be well worth exploring then!

He's also done 6-9 with LSO.
