Your Favourite Sir Colin Davis Recording

Just looking at his list of recordings, I never knew there were so many and, to be honest, wasn't aware just how many of them I actually have on my shelves!

The Concertgebouw Haydn and Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique lead the field for me together with his Dresden Elgar 1.

I used to love his Haydn 86 on LP but - has this ever been transferred to CD?

    Anyway, your favourite CD, CD's!

      Here's a comprehensive list:

Sir Colin Davis (Conductor) and details of their recordings available to browse and buy. Sir Colin Rex Davis (1927-2013) was a noted British conductor. He first found wide acclaim when he stood in for an ill Otto Klemperer in a...

The old Philips and the later LSO live recordings of Les Troyens, in just about equal measure, though the former partly for personal sentimental reasons. I queued overnight for the 1968 Proms performance of The Trojans (i.e. in English). One of the most memorable musical experiences of my life.

His early Messiah. Mozart Oboe concerto with Leon Goossens, Beethoven 7 (RPO), Berlioz - so much; where do we begin?

I was amazed at just how much there is when working my way through the Presto list.

I ordered the EMI Icon box last night and it's already been dispatched.

I haven't got any of those recordings nor, moreover, have I ever heard them. Once a conductor has passed away it's the time to reflect on their whole career and it was this thought that prompted the immediate purchase.

Those are the ones on my shelves that spring to mind

The new Berlioz Requiem (of which extracts were played on R3 this evening) from St Paul's last summer, I think, sounds as if it's a bit special. At last, an LSO live not in the wretched Barbican acoustic.

Is *anyone* going to believe that I chose Sir Colin Davis's new LSO Live Berlioz Requiem as this Sat's CDReview Disc of the Wk...3 wks ago?

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                          Yep, me, too.

                          And the Haydn "Londons".

                          And the Mozart operas.

                          And The Midsummer Marriage.

And the Sibelius symphonies (any of them).

All the RCO Haydns (82, 83, 88, 93-104). Was there really an 86?

                            The first two Sibelius cycles.

The Trojans (one of the few Berlioz works I enjoy)

Tippett Triple Concerto - worth buying just for the slow central movement with its exquisite soaring melody

The Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique from Amsterdam, and Dresden Elgar 1, plus the LSO Sibelius 2 (on RCA, not 'Live'). I found the Haydn symphonies a bit too rich-sounding for my taste.

The Mahler 4 from Bavarian RSO is very enjoyable.

I also note I have a Bavarian live CD of the Enigmas plus RVW Sym 6, and the SACD issue of his Tosca, neither of which I have played for a while.

                              Did he record Verdi operas?
