The Fruhbeck de Burgos version led the field for quite a while. One drawback for me was that at least in its first appearance on CD it seemed to lack punch and sounded rather light in the bass. Perhaps it has been remastered, in which case I'd go for it again. I like the Jochum version, though I find nowadays that I'm not so enamoured with the work as I once was.
An early stereo memory for me was hearing the Sawallisch recording of Der Mond at one of the audio fares in the early days. Even today the thunderbolt effect sound pretty terrific, although as a whole the piece does rather remind me of the Munich Putsch!

Count me amongst the vulgarians that enjoy the piece. I've never heard a better performance than Fruhbeck de Burgos's not least because of the the ravishing singing of Lucia Popp. I believe there is a dvd of the German tv performance originally shown in the seventies in which she also figures. I forget the conductor and orchestra but seem to recall that at one point Miss Popp sings whilst standing seemingly naked in a barrel; somehow the memory lingers.

No barrel here, gradus - but it does look at one point that the late Ms Popp was auditioning for a Flake advert.

This is a piece which people seem either to love or hate. I remember the 1974 Prom mentioned above - I think it was on TV. A choir I was in sang it with the BBC SSO around that time.

I have a recording on vinyl from 1984 - RSO Berlin with Sylvia Greenberg, James Bowman, and Stephen Roberts, cond Chailly.

I cannot stand it , ghastly text , horrible music and Nazi connotations . I once found myself listening to it in Hong Kong with the HKPO conduced by David Atherton - he looked to be hating it almost as much as me .
